Renowned WBC and WBA World Female Featherweight Champion Jelena Mrdjenovich (37-10-2, 19 KOs) is now set to stage her eagerly anticipated fiftieth professional bout in her hometown of Edmonton, Alberta this spring. In the works for some time, the fight was on hiatus as the City of Edmonton had hastily suspended all combat sports in December 2017 after pro boxer Tim Hague was tragically killed during a match last June. While a review of the Edmonton Combative Sports Commission was definitely prudent, punishing the fighters that make their livelihood in the ring was viewed as an egregious act by many and Mrdjenovich became a voice for the athletes during the conflict. News broke on Tuesday that the city was lifting their moratorium and it was quickly announced that K.O. Boxing Promotions will stage their next gala on April 28 at the beautiful Shaw Conference Centre where Mrdjenovich will headline.
“The fact that they’re lifting [the ban] is a relief,” Mrdjenovich told the CBC this week. “But it still kind of ticks you off that people who know nothing about what you do have that much of an effect over your life and your livelihood, and how you support yourself. I’ve been extremely supportive of this city and been extremely proud to be an Edmontonian, and this is why I wanted to have my 50th fight here in Edmonton. But if I had to, I was going to fight somewhere else. Because at the end of the day, what I’ve learned from this experience is that no one looks out for you. Even when you thought someone had your back, or your city had your back, at the end of the day there’s only you.”
As yet only Mrdjenovich is listed as headlining K.O. Boxing’s April 28 gala where she will defend here WBC and WBA titles, but this week’s announcement no doubt sets the stage for many young boxers in Edmonton and Alberta to return to the ring.
