Another week and another Fight-of-the-Year candidate in the red hot World Boxing Super Series (WBSS) Saturday at the Bolshoy Ice Dome in Adler, Russia. In today’s awaited semi-final and showdown of monster punchers, unbeaten IBF world champion Murat Gassiev (26-0, 19 KOs) dug deep to score a sensational final round stoppage over previously undefeated Yunier Dorticos (21-1, 20 KOs).
It was a clubbing, brutal affair from start to finish.
In the early going Dorticos pressed the action while a retreating Gassiev picked his spots to stop and counter.
In the middle rounds Gassiev came on and took the fight to Dorticos who seemed to lose some steam.
Down the stretch Gassiev landed some telling blows but Dorticos appeared to have an iron chin and stood his ground to produce some dramatic moments in the final rounds.
Both men stood toe to toe and exchanged bombs until a left hook from Gassiev in the twelfth turned the tide and dropped the Cuban hard. Dorticos gamely got up but was knocked down twice more, the final time through the ropes to give the Russian the dramatic win in front of a frenzied hometown crowd.
Newly unified WBA/IBF champion Gassiev will now face off against WBO/WBC world champion Oleksandr Usyk (14-0, 11 KOs) in the World Boxing Super Series Final in May to produce a unified cruiserweight world champion and Muhammad Ali Trophy winner.
