On Thursday night Quebec based Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM) brought professional boxing back to the Cabaret of the Casino de Montréal where local area Fight Fans were treated to an explosive night of fistic action.
In the main event of the evening surging Colombian born, Montreal based heavyweight Oscar ‘Kaboom’ Rivas (21-0, 15 KOs) lived up to his nickname with an explosive first round knockout of Costa Rica’s Carl Davis Drumond (31-5, 25 KOs). The impressive and violent win saw Rivas capture the vacant NABF Heavyweight Title. The local favourite started fast with a stern jab and soon after the opening bell a looping overhand right had Drumond in trouble. Sensing the end was near, Rivas was unrelenting and pounced on his man, hammering the visitor along the ropes. After a combination of power shots another well placed right hand dropped Drumond and he was halted after rising from the deck while looking extremely unsteady. The time was 1:08 of the opening stanza. Check out video of the knockout courtesy of Pierre Lavoie at ringside:
In the co-main event of the evening fast rising Quebec based super middleweight Shakeel ‘The Jamaican Juggernaut’ Phinn (16-1, 10 KOs) beat the fight right out of the normally durable Mario Aguilar (17-2, 15 KOs) of Mexico. Phinn was all over Aguilar from the outset and did some brilliant work on the inside to put a paint-job of hurt on the visiting fighter. Phinn pounded away with an array of well placed power shots for four rounds until Aguilar elected to retire on his stool before the fifth bell giving Phinn the TKO win. It was the fifth victory for him in 2017 alone, after reeling off six wins in 2016. Check out this stunning view from the trenches in the form of Pierre Lavoie’s intimate video from the ring mat:
In preliminary action American super middleweight Dario Bredicean (15-0, 4 KOs) pounded out a hard fought but decisive eight-round unanimous decision over Frenchman Saidou Sall (10-6-2, 4 KOs). Scores were 80-71 (x2) and 79-72.
Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec’s Michaël Gadbois (16-1-3, 4 KOs) scored an exciting six round decision over Abraham Gomez (28-15-1, 13 KW) in a lightweight bout. Scores were 60-54 (x2) and 59-55.
Former Montreal based amateur champion and Lee Baxter charge Mazlum Akdeniz (1-0) was successful in his professional debut Thursday night, scoring a unanimous victory against Mexico’s Ricardo Burgos (1-7-1, 0 KO).
In another pro-debut, Longueuil’s Terry Osias (1-0) pounded out a unanimous decision over Ontario’s Marco Parente (0-2-1). All three scores were 40-36 for Osias.
