Rising pound for pound star Vasyl ‘Hi-Tech’ Lomachenko (9-1, 7 KOs) successfully defended his World Boxing Organization (WBO) Association Junior Lightweight World Championship with a stoppage of WBO No. 10-ranked contender Miguel ‘The Scorpion’ Marriaga (25-3, 21 KOs) after seven rounds Saturday night in Los Angeles. It was a Top Rank production seen live on ESPN in the USA and Super Channel in Canada.
Lomachenko started slowly and measured Marriaga, beginning to pick him apart in the early rounds. He used a good jab and superb footwork to dominate and began to stalk his man with stunning accuracy.
In Round 3 a left hand dropped Marriaga though he managed to survive the stanza.
Lomachenko was cut from a clash of heads in Round 4 but quickly went back to work bedazzling the challenger raining down punches from all angles. Marriaga showed resolve to hang in there but was largely back peddling looking to cover up in full survival mode.
While he did a lot of clowning, the defending champion was clearly dominating on the cards at the midway point of the bout.
In Round 7 Lomachenko got serious and for the first two minutes put a bewildering and sustained paint-job of stunningly accurate punches on Marriaga. He battered him all around the ring and scored a knockdown in the closing seconds. While he did beat the count, the challenger’s corner had seen enough and the bout was stopped before the sound of the bell to start Round 8. Lomachenko threw 83 power punches in the seventh round alone, landing 40 of them to seal the stoppage win.
In the co-main event, former lightweight world title challenger Ray Beltran (34-7-1 21 KOs) pounded out a hard fought majority decision over a game and tricky Bryan Vasquez (36-3, 19 KOs) of Costa Rica in a ten round bout. More info to come in our weekend scorecard. Stay tuned!
