Rising pound for pound star Mikey Garcia (37-0, 30 KOs) remained unbeaten Saturday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York with a dominant twelve round unanimous decision over a game but out-gunned Adrien Broner (33-3, 24 KOs). It was a 140-pound bout that saw Garcia capture the WBC light welterweight Diamond title and was televised live on Showtime.
Garcia threw and landed virtually twice the punches Broner did and was largely in control the whole way behind a poised, textbook boxing stance. Coming forward, Garcia used a stern jab and cut off the ring with aplomb on Broner who looked to use the ring to avoid his man’s constant pressure. Broner was game but simply couldn’t muster enough of an attack to win more than a round or two.
Neither fighter was hurt but Garcia’s sustained body attack paved the way for his cruising ahead down the stretch.
To his credit, Broner never lost his will and continued to dig deep trying to load up late in the fight, but it just resulted in him eating even more leather with the openings it created. Garcia finished strong by throwing over a hundred punches in both the eleventh and twelfth rounds to close the show strong.
It was an exciting fight despite it’s one-sidedness.
When twelve rounds were complete scores were read as 117-111 and 116-112 (x2)… all for Garcia. FightFan.com’s Ace Freeman had it 118-110 for Mikey.
