Once highly touted Cuban star Yuriorkis Gamboa (26-2, 17 KOs) quit on his stool in a stunning upset last weekend at Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas on Friday night when unheralded Robinson Castellanos (22-11, 13 KOs) took the fight right out of him.
Gamboa looked lackluster from the outset allowing the rugged veteran to bully him around the ring. Castellanos found it easy to land his right hand on a stationary Gamboa and punished him early. The underdog dropped the Cuban in Rounds 3 and 4 to take command of the bout.
While Gamboa survived and boxed well in the ensuing rounds he did little to keep Castellanos off of him.
Castellanos turned up the heat in Round 7 and the result was Gamboa electing to quit on his stool and not answer the bell for Round 8 giving Castellanos the improbably TKO win.
