Pascal vs. Hopkins: Full coverage from Toronto tour stop!

By Ivan 'LatinoPorVida' Montiel (19-Oct-2010)

FightFan.com’s Ivan Montiel was live on location in Toronto earlier today where reigning light heavyweight kingpin Jean Pascal came face to face with living legend Bernard Hopkins before a rabid crowd of Canadian Fight Fans and media alike. Read Ivan’s blog from the event and read on for photo and video coverage!

As expected it was the largest boxing crowd I can remember while covering this great sport of boxing for many years. I am talking about Bernard Hopkins and WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal appearing in Toronto today to promote their upcoming title fight taking place on December 18, 2010 in Quebec City, Canada. From the start I could just feel the excitment in the air with so many local Fight Fans anticipating the arrival of both fighters. Oscar de la Hoya was on hand to represent his Golden Boy Promotions and the Canadian side was represented by Group Yvon Michel. When the fighters did appear the crowd went wild with admiration and respect for both warriors and their accompanying teams.

Ivan Montiel’s Blog from Toronto:

My Fellow Fight Fans,

The press conference began with both promoters thanking everyone for all the support. Afterwards it was both fighters with their team members talking to the crowd about past fights and what is in store for this great match up.

What stood out the most was Pascal’s trainer Russ Anber calling out my name as he spoke in front of the media by saying how he remembers the many times we spoke so highly of both Juan Manuel Marquez and Bernard Hopkins and what great fighters both are for boxing.
Both Russ Anber and I have tremendous respect for Hopkins, Russ always said to me from day one how he would not bet against Hopkins and how Hopkins never gets KO’d well he’s right. We spoke of Hopkins being one of a kind, a special fighter, a throw back fighter and now Russ Anber, Marc Ramsay must prepare Jean Pascal to beat Hopkins.

How will team Pascal beat Hopkins that is the remaining question we FIGHT FANS need to witness but it won’t be easy since Hopkins has proven us wrong many times before. Hopkins has beaten many great fighters including his very own promoter De La Hoya not to forget one of Puerto Rico’s best fighters ever Felix “TITO” Trinidad, Jermaine Taylor, Antonio Tarver, Kelly Pavlik and most recently Roy Jones Jr in their rematch. He has not only beaten many greats he’s ended their boxing careers, they have not been the same after taking a beating from Hopkins.

There are also many FIGHT FANS whom are judging Hopkins from his most recent peformance against Roy Jones Jr saying it wasn’t a good performance on his part therefore he doesn’t stand a chance against the much younger and faster Jean Pascal who looked spectacular against former Chad Dawson to become the current WBC light heavyweight champion.

Hopkins says he loves being the underdog therefore the more FIGHT FANS against him the better so he can prove us wrong. In the end all I had to say to Hopkins was “I am a huge Trinidad fan but ever since you beat him you’ve got my respect” Hopkins looked at me, smiled, shook my hand and thanked me as I took a photo with the living legend. It was an honour having met Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins who I believe has a great shot at beating the younger, faster yet not experienced enough to deal with Hopkins tricks.

I will never forget what Hopkins has accomplished and I will never bet against Hopkins which is why I was one of the few FIGHT FANS rooting for him while he beat Pavlik. If only Pascal can pull off the win by being the first one to stop Hopkins he will then become a force to be reckon with but it’s going to be hard real hard. Yes Hopkins is 45 years old but as we all know age ain’t nothing in boxing it’s the experience that counts most of the times. Hopkins has proven his experience in the ring is enough to get him the win time and time again.

The Pascal-Hopkins press tour has finished it’s three city tour in Canada which included Quebec City,Montreal and Toronto promoting their December 18 WBC and RING Magazine Light Heavyweight World Championship at the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City to be televised live in Canada on pay-per-view and on SHOWTIME. Both fighters are to travel to New York City tonight hosting their final press conference and only U.S appearance tomorrow.

seems hopkins has the size advantage here heh.

  2. Ace Freeman Says:

Great job Ivan. Those are some very nice photos and the video made me excited to see this fight.

  3. Ace Freeman Says:

Pascal should win this one, but never count the old dog out. Hopkins will 100 per cent of the savvy and physical might he has left to frustrate, rough up and hang in there with Jean.

JP needs to punch in bunches and never stop working.

  4. hehehe Says:

hopkins is too clever… if he were only few years younger, but after that show he put up with roy jones, we need to doubt about on who to put your bet on.

  5. xAUGUSTUSx Says:

I can’t wait for this one. I have a feeling we might see the end of B-Hop’s run. Who knows.

  6. Ivan "LatinoPorVida" Montiel Says:

    Thanks Ace!

It was an honour to meet Hopkins and yes both The Executioner and Pascal sure know how to hype a fight!

I am so excited I can’t wait till December!

BTW I am picking Hopkins. I believe he still has it in him to beat the younger and faster Pascal. Hopkins ain’t no future hall of famer for nothing this guy beats his opponents before they even step in the ring. Once they are in the ring Hopkins uses his tricks to punish them which is why they are never the same!

  7. RUSSELL HARRISON Says:

HOPKINS IS AT THE END OF HIS ROAD. SURE HE’S CLEVER BUT HE HAS NO PUNCHES LEFT. WATCH HOW HE’LL THROW A PUNCH AND HOLD ON FOR DEAR LIFE LIKE HE DID AGAINST ROY JONES. PASCAL APPEARS TO HAVE LOTS OF ENDURANCE AND IF HE FIGHTS SMART HE SHOULD WIN, BUT HE CAN’T GET INTO THE GAME THAT I’M SURE BHOP HAS PLANNED FOR HIM

  8. tony t Says:

b-hop is cool, but he will fall this night!

  9. Ed Guapo Says:

Hopkins is a true warrior, pure and simple. He competes at an incredible level of athleticism, and he’s 46. Got to give the man respect for that. My moneys still on Pascal though, but I know B-Hop won’t make it easy for him. This match really might prove to be a good one.

  10. painkiller Says:

hopkins is a dirty fighter…..like mayweather
