Nonito Donaire scored a big knockout victory over Hernan Marquez last night in Puerto Rico on Showtime. Read on for more on about what Top Rank Promotions has in store for ‘The Filipino Flash’ in his next bout!
Nonito Donaire stopped Hernan Marquez in the eighth round last night in Puerto Rico to stake his claim to the interim WBA world super flyweight title. It was a spectacular stoppage for the big punching ‘Filipino Flash’, and his seventh KO victory in his last eight wins. While Donaire is widely considered one of the best fighters in boxing’s lower weight classes and is regarded by many as a top pound-for-pound fighter in all of boxing, marquee fights have avoided him in the last few years.
A long sought after rematch with Vic Darchinyan (who Donaire handed his first pro loss via KO of the year in 2007) has fallen through in the negotiating stage several times. While that has been frustrating for Donaire and boxing fans alike, the prospect of an equally exciting fight was bantered about last night at Top Rank’s post fight presser in Puerto Rico. It was rumored that Donaire may face highly regarded WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel of Mexico this November.
Top Rank boss Bob Arum (who was on hand in Puerto Rico this weekend to watch his charge Juan Manuel Lopez) made mention of a possible Donaire vs. Montiel clash during post fight activities.
The news was welcomed by Donaire who has been clamoring for a marquee fight for quite some time.
“The best things from last night were my eighth round TKO win, Bob Arum confirming (a potential) Montiel fight in November, and I got congratulated personally by (Philippines) President Aquino on a phone call.” Donaire told his fans this morning via his social networking outlets.
More serious discussions about the potential mega fight will no doubt intensify should Montiel get past Rafael Concepcion as is expected next week in Chiapas, Mexico.
Fernando Montiel is a big punching highly skilled star in the lower weight classes who moved up to 118 pound in 2008 after a string of impressive victories at super flyweight. The crafty Mexican scored a stunning first round stoppage of previously unbeaten Filipino prospect Ciso Morales earlier this year to capture the WBO bantamweight title, and followed that up by impressively lifting the WBC 118 pound belt from Japan’s Hozumi Hasegawa in April.
A Donaire vs. Montiel bout would pit two of Top Rank’s highly regarded champions against one another and with both fighters sharing the same promotional outfit it stands to reason the bout should be fairly easy to get signed.
Stay tuned to FightFan.com for more in the coming weeks.

It’s time to develop a successor to Manny Pacquiao’s throne & this could be Donaire. He has a potential to be boxing’s next big star. I hope Bob Arum give Donaire big break this time & maybe with Manny, with his big connection to Arum could help Donaire land a big match up sooner than later. It’s just unfortunate for Donaire that after his devastating KO win over

Darchinyan, has landed mediocre fights. He deserved a big fight.

this is a good fight, a good match-up. skills are equal. im rooting for donaire coz im a pinoy. he got the talent and power. just put some good defense and i think he will win. at 118lbs he can be a unified champ, perez, darchi, arce, morel i think will all be defeated by donaire. he is skillwise better than them. just focus on stamina and defense. then he can challenge vasquez at 122. just stay down to earth donaire and thank God always. you will just as exciting as pac soon.

IT’S ABOUT TIME DONAIRE MOVED UP IN WEIGHT, WHAT’S HE DOING IN THE 115 LBS, WHEN HE SHOULD BE IN THE 122-126 LBS BY NOW. ANYWAY, IF HE BEAT MONTIEL, THEN HE CAN GO TO 122, AND START FIGHTING GUYS LIKE WILFREDO VASQUEZ JR, WHO IS A PRETTY GOOD FIGHTER.

Montiel will surely fight his heart out against Donaire but we will see. Both are damn, damn good and killers with their fists. Montiel is fast to capitalize on an opponent’s mistake, even if it’s a footwork mistake. And he’d bomb you right away. Man, he’s damn good. However, Donaire is Master Tactician and he’s seeing angles in you he could blast with his very bad left hook and wicked right cross/straight… And you’d drop dead for sure. Ask Vic Darchinyan and Chango Vargas. Let’s see it boyz this November.

man.. i love this guy! he is a hell of a fighter with a very very good skills! his last saturdays’s fight shows how he manage to fight with both fist coupled with hand speed, stinging right jab an a fluid motion… he is surely an elite fighter i think in 115-122! he is master technician and he will hit you in very odd angle which you cannot see! one thing whcih makes him exceptional is his ability to capitalize on holes on the defense even if it is just a small hole… wow! time to step up montiel and fight this guy!

This is a fight that really needs to be made. Donaire has been fighting nothing but bums over the past three years. He seriously needs to fight elite boxers to get his name out there. I doubt he could fill in Pacquiao’s shoes though.

i like donaire style a lot, he is speedy, counter puncher, very nice hand speed, not like almost all the recent philippinos who are trying to mimick manny pacquiao, i mean pac is a beast but donaire style is just great..
what he needs is to move up in weight for the next years and when he finally arrives 122 + challenge juanma, caballero, gamboa, hah that would b awesome

I’ll go for “the flash”; he is a thinking fighter. Just don’t mixed it up in the early rounds, Nonito. Wear him down with jabs; a lot of side movements to negate the power of “KO-chulito”. Let the upper cuts fly; let loose the straights, and oh, don’t forget the left cross that sent the “raging bull’ to the canvas!!

Stay fit Nonito like always, its there for the taking for you. Bob Arum needs to step up and
bring you fights.
Dic Darchinyan is useless, he’s Floyd Jr.’s half
brother. Talk alot of bull and when it comes down to it….he’s scared! Another David Haye…lol~

I think mananalo pa rin si Donaire by decision.. But I hope na manaknock-out niya ang kalaban.
