Watch the Fight for the Belts

Highlights: Paul Malignaggi vs. Juan Diaz II
By FightFan.com Staff (17-Dec-2009)

Courtesy of HBO, WATCH video highlights from last weekend’s rematch between former light welterweight champion Paul Malinaggi and former world lightweight champion Juan Diaz from Chicago. Malignaggi boxed well and captured a competitive but clear unanimous decision over Diaz to avenge a close loss from their first encounter earlier this year.

.

Juan Diaz vs. Paul Malignaggi II highlights:

Paulie ‘The Magic Man’ Malignaggi won a unanimous decision over Juan Diaz in the rematch of their controversial first bout from earlier in the year. Malignaggi boxed beautifully in the first four rounds, likely sweeping them all. Diaz came back to outwork Malignaggi in the fifth round. The fight started to get more competitive in the middle rounds, but Malignaggi stunned Diaz with a right hand to win the seventh. Diaz outworked Malignaggi in Round 8, and was looking stronger going down the stretch. However, Malignaggi scored a dubious flash knockdown in Round 10, which earned him a 10-8 round. Diaz probably won Rounds 11 and 12 by out punching Malignaggi, who seemed to be more willing to stand and trade, but it was too little too late. All three judges scored the bout 116-111 for Malignaggi. With the win, Malignaggi has likely earned himself another appearance on HBO, and expressed an interest in fighting Juan Manuel Marquez in the post-fight interview. Diaz left the ring immediately following the decision and was unavailable for comment.
