Exclusive Interview
By Ace Freeman (12-Nov-2009)
Ace Freeman caught up with top trainer Roger Mayweather at Mayweather Central in Las Vegas to get his thoughts on this weekend’s Pacquiao vs. Cotto mega fight. Don’t miss what he had to say, only on FightFan.com!

FF: Roger there’s a big fight coming up this weekend between Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto. What do you think of the style match up in that fight?
RM: Style don’t mean shit in that fight. Pacquiao doesn’t move his head or slip punches very well so it’s not about the style…
FF: Do you think this is a fight where size is a factor?
RM: I believe it is. I believe that if Cotto walks his ass backwards, he’s going to wear him down and stop him. If Cotto walks Pacquiao back, I don’t see any way Pacquiao can win the fight.
FF: What do you think of Cotto as a fighter?
RM: He’s all right. He’s an okay fighter. He’s good a good left hand. Don’t get me wrong, Pacquiao’s a good fighter but I don’t see tremendous skill in him. I think Cotto is too big and strong and that he’ll walk him back and stop him.
FF: There are those who suggest Cotto is somewhat damaged from the Margarito fight…-
RM: Most people don’t know shit about boxing! A lot of fighters come back from a loss without a problem so I wouldn’t worry about what people say. Look at how many titles Tommy Hearns won. People said he was damaged when he lost to Ray Leonard. How many big fights did he come back to win after that? It just goes to show you that most people don’t know shit about what it means to receive punishment because they haven’t boxed a day in their life!
FF: I was alluding to the fact that the beating Cotto suffered against Margarito might have been compounded by Margarito possibly having cement in his gloves…
RM: He may have… but Cotto is still fighting and he’s still winning.
FF: Did you see the Cotto vs. Clottey fight?
RM: Yea. I thought he won. I thought he pulled it out.
FF: From a trainer’s perspective what does Manny Pacquiao need to do in this fight to overcome Cotto’s advantages in size and strength to win the fight?
RM: It’s hard for me to say. I don’t really know. I don’t see Pacquiao as having tremendous boxing skills and he’s going to need to out box Cotto. I think Cotto’s a big strong physical guy and he hits harder than Pacquiao. That’s why I think that he’ll pressure Pacquiao and beat him.
FF: What do you think Pacquiao’s chances are to pull out the win?
RM: I’d be shocked if Pacquiao won this fight. Shocked. Like I said, I see Cotto putting on the pressure, going to the body and that should win him the fight. I’ll be watching and we’ll see.
FF: Well I’ll swing by next week after the fight is over to get your thoughts on it…
RM: You come by and we’ll see if my prediction was right!
FF: As always Roger we appreciate your time.
RM: All right then.

IF your nephew is willing to fight Pacquaio and hopefully don’t make excuses about Arum is the problem that’s why he is not fighting Pacquaio. Roger will be more shocked if Pacquaio and Mayweather happen and Pacqauio beat his nephew, he will be menatally shocked for sure..LOL

Jing Tapia ( stillawake357@ yahoo.com ) Says:
Before… Ledwaba called him out! so did Barrera, Marquez, Morales, Agapito Sanchez, Lucero, George Julio, they also called him out. So did DLH and Hatton. All of these fighters thought they have the tools to beat Pac. Only Morales had some success.
People like Valero, your Juan Diaz & Casamayor, Malignali, even Chavez Jr. also feel they can take Pac. They have this boxer’s bravado and courage to call him out coz they’re warriors ( not necessarily great warriors ). Does this mean they stand a chance? These are all just ” B ” fighters who also thought they have the formula to beat Pac.
They’re all wrong! What I’m driving here is, all fighters who have gained some success in boxing truly believe that they’ve got what it takes and ” Wanted to have a bigger share of the pie”. To earn it, beeecause they don’t have a single slice yet, they have to beat the man having the biggest slice. right?
Mayweather is no different with these guys man. Yes he’s got a piece of pie left ( 1 slice left after he threw his half box ) and wishing to have a good part of it again, but he doesn’t want to engage people who’ve got the other pieces now ( Cotto, Mosley, Margarito ), much less the one having the biggest slice of ‘em ol ( Pacquiao ).
In Tennis, an injured star returning in the tour has to earn his slot through tournament victories. May returned fighting a midget! All these time, your boy May’s doing are all publicity stunts to up his popularity hoping that his popularity will gravitate all pies there is. It doesn’t work that way.
To prove that Pac and not May is the owner of the biggest slice, read this :
Forbes, Times, ESPN, Nike, Kimmel serenade, Gusi Peace prize, P4P #1, Multiple Boxer of the year, Sports Illustrated cover. Reader’s Digest, Billboard in Downtown LA, City Key of LA, FanDemonium wherever he goes, Dodgers, Giants, Yankees, Bryant, Celtics Big 3, Oneil, Pussycat dolls, Sly Stallone, President Clinton… my goshh! These endorsements doesn’t lie man… People know whos got the biggest slice!Pac has business interest worth over 50M USD, owns 5 mansions all paid up plus he’ll be engaging a non-Mayweather fight for about 30M.
Your prettyboy Floyd? what he got? Reebok, RA Rugged man and the IRS. Period!
This ain’t popularity contest ( big mouth May ).
All he has to do is raise hands, show interest and earn his pie or two. By raising hands to get a churozz ( Marquez, Alvarez or even Hatton2 ) won’t give him the credit he desperately wanted for a pie.Pac earned his half box of pie immediately after your boy May threw his coz people who baked ‘em has no one else to give but to Pac who has fought for his own pie and happens to stand just next to May when he left.
Admit it man! your May doesn’t have the whole bunch of it, yet he talks as if he baked it himself and owns everything. And please, stop acting like May. People dislike him.
Just a reminder from a friend.

Ivan "LatinoPorVida" Montiel Says:
I would have to disagree with Rogers comments.
First of all I happen to be one of those FIGHT FANS who believe Cotto has been ruined by Margacheato. Yes Cotto is winning after his devasting loss against Margacheato. Cotto beat Michael Jennings big deal. Cotto won a close fight against Clottey. I think with everything said Cotto is mentally not the same fighter he once was. Most people don’t know shit about boxing? I am sorry Roger but I know my boxing along with most of the boxing experts out there!
Second of all how could Pacquiao beating Cotto shock anyone? Pacquiao is the favorite in this fight. I sure hope your right about your prediction yet something tells me you will be wrong just like you were predicting Hatton to beat Pacquiao.

Rogue Says:
Admit it, Roger doesn’t like the Pac from the start, he stands by his word until this time. If the Pacman will box only, there is no way Cotto will win the fight but Pac wants to engage and would like to please the crowd. That makes him far from Money May when it comes to this kind sports.

This family (Mayweathers) of arrogants thinks they are the only great persona in the field of boxing. Roger must now prepare a standby AMBULANCE for himself because comes fight night he will be shelled shock to witness how MANNY will DEVOUR COTTO and realize who is truly the P4P King. Take note, it is “Not your nephew (Floyd Jr.) man.”

KenKoy Says:
Prepare also your nephew to fight Manny next year. Let us see how tough your Cock (I mean HEN)will again try to duck and avoid fighting Manny. For sure you will use the paycheck sharing as scapegoat. No way that Floyd Jr could get the big chunk of pie share against Manny. He he he.

Some of the comments I’ve deleted were very disappointing and ignorant.
If you hate what Roger has to say, don’t click on something that contains what he’s said.
As far as this interview goes, he’s entitled to his opinion, none of it was insulting, and there are quite a few people who echo his sentiment of Cotto walking Pacquiao back.
I don’t agree with his take, but there’s nothing wrong with what he said… and again, if it upsets you don’t read it.
There’s no excuse for some of the racists comments I’ve deleted so far.

I would’nt say cotto is damaged goods. . . he simply just puts on too much weight on fight night and that’s the reason he’s kinda sluggish and slow specially on the mid point of the fight. and also because i think he has the luxury to dictate when to train with his chosen team. . . pac will win if he can take cotto’s punches and i think he can. . . pasc’s foot speed will confuse cotto just like the other two before. to beat pac you need to be like marquez, a fast counter puncher, who takes a punch while countering. . .

Tony929 Says:
Why is everybody riding the Pacquiao fan train. Where were you guys in the last couple of years where he was just another guy facing his equal in Marquez. The Delahoya fight didn’t mean nothing, anybody that really knows boxing knows Delahoya was a walking skeleton in that fight, and Hatton and Pacquiao were just 2 wildmen winging punches. Any one of them could’ve won that fight. Pacquiao just connected his wild punches. Pacquiao’s chin has not been tested since he moved up in weight. His body and chin will definitely be tested Saturday night though. Good luck Pacquiao fans, your gonna need it
November 13th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
-
Tony929 Says:
Floyd Mayweather Jr. is still the best pound for pound fighter in the world, hands down. I don’t understand how a guy can come and fight the same guys that Mayweather already beat in the past, and they name him the best pound for pound fighter in the world. When “Money” fought Delahoya they fought at 154lbs,(not 145lbs. like in the Pacquiao fight)which means that delahoya probably came to the ring at around 160 in the Mayweather fight. And if you go back and see, “Money” went down in weight after the weigh-in, and came to the fight as a welterweight fighting a jr. middleweight.
November 13th, 2009 at 1:35 pm

Dreamliner Says:
nice analogy Tony,
Don’t think Hatton had a chance with no head movement fighting a Southpaw. Also I respect any fighter that comes in with a gameplan, and doesn’t feel like they have to deviate from that to please the (UFC era) of fans (yes PBF)!
I am a fan of boxing, overall my logic tells me Manny will NOT win, based on what Ive seen in the past from Cotto. Manny has a nice left, but Cotto’s guard does cover his right very well. Maybe Cotto will be cut, I still see him winning by SD due to stalking his opponent and effective bodyshots. Also depends on the judges, some favor aggressiveness, some look at ring generalship. Then there is always a controversial judge.
Win or lose I hope everyone comes back and states they’re opinion!

November 14th, 2009 at 1:17 am
-
TKoz Says:
I’m a Pac-man fan as well as a Cotto fan, both are respectful and humble fighters. I don’t see Cotto pulling it out. He has the heart of a Lion, but some flaws are his chin isn’t the best in the game, and he cuts easily. He’s going to be on close watch for the Pac-man left hook, but ask Ricky Hatton the right sure as heck packs a punch as well. I call Pac-man TKO in 5!
November 14th, 2009 at 1:19 am
-
TKoz Says:
The Marquez VS Mayweather bout was a safe fight for Money Mayweather. Maruqez (a counter-punch style fighter.) Doesn’t stand a chance in France with a fighter faster then him. Money is no push over or walk in the park the man makes ZERO mistakes in the ring and is a technical fighter. Marquez has a style which is a set up for failure against a fighter like Mayweather. You need 12 rounds of fury. If Zab Judah only had heart he’d give Mayweather a run for his money. Zab probably has the best 4 rounds any fighter can bring to the table. After 4, Goodnite Folks Zab is gassed.

As I mentioned earlier when I showed up the day after the fight Roger was busy with Floyd training.
I left Vegas the next day as I live in Canada.
I haven’t been back since so there won’t be any kind of follow up until I’m down there again some time early next year.
