Breaking News
By Ace Freeman (23-Nov-2009)
According to ESPN, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer (who is representing Team Mayweather in negotiations) is meeting with Top Rank’s Bob Arum today to officially begin negotiations that will potentially see Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. pitted against each other in a historic 2010 showdown!

It’s the fight the world wants to see and both Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. seem to recognize that as their representatives are set to sit down today, Monday Nov. 23, 2009 to begin negotiations to stage the historic showdown in 2010. ESPN reported today that Team Mayweather has enlisted the services of Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer (who has acted as co-promoter in their last three bouts) to represent their interests in a meeting with Manny Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank Promotions. It has been reported that the two are currently meeting in Las Vegas to try to reach an immediate agreement to get the blockbuster fight signed and sealed.
“Floyd and I want to see if we can get the fight done,” Schaefer told ESPN’s Dan Rafael. “The fact that I am flying to Las Vegas to meet with Bob shows you how serious our side is about making the fight. Bob (Arum) and I will approach this without egos and try to get it done under fair terms. Floyd gave me his marching orders and I will see today how it goes and report back.”
The two sides meeting this soon after Manny Pacquiao’s Nov. 14 destruction of Miguel Cotto is definitely an encouraging sign, but many people in the industry have pointed out Mayweather and Pacquiao are likely to see more combat at the negotiation table than in the actual fight itself.
In the last eight days both men have indirectly said in the media they wish to fight each other next, yet banter from both camps about recent pay-per-view sales seem to suggest how the purse is split may become a serious obstacle.
Pacquiao did more pay-per-view buys in his recent fight against Cotto (1.25 Million units) than Mayweather did in his late September bout against Juan Manuel Marquez (1 Million units).
According to Team Pacquiao staple Rex ‘Wakee’ Salud, the edge in recent PPV numbers should tip the table in Pacquiao’s favor. Salud recently told the Manila Bulletin he believes the purse should be slit 55-45 for the ‘Pacman’.
Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s right hand man Leonard Ellerbe disagrees.
“When the American public speaks, the numbers are quantifiable and irrefutable,” Ellerbe recently told Michigan Live’s David Mayo, referring to the fact that Mayweather has done higher PPV sales against three common opponents in Juan Manuel Marquez, Oscar De La Hoya (in the biggest money fight in boxing history), and Ricky Hatton.
“Floyd has done better numbers (against common opponents), both domestically and internationally,” Ellerbe concluded. “Floyd and Hatton did the largest number ever in the history of the U.K. They did a little more than 1 million homes, and Pacquiao did a little more than 300,000 homes with the same guy. Clearly, Floyd is a bigger star than Pacquiao.”
The difference of opinion will have to be put aside if Pacquiao and Mayweather want to rake in one of the biggest profits in the history of boxing. A clash between the two is expected to shatter the current record of 2.44 million buys generated by Mayweather’s 2007 victory against the popular Oscar De La Hoya.
Many are quick to point out that if the two super stars can avoid killing the fight in arguing over slim percentages on paper, both men will profit from career high paydays they will likely never approach with other potential opponents.
It is with this in mind that Team Mayweather has once again enlisted the help of Richard Schaefer, who has a good report with Bob Arum. That is in stark contrast to the relationships both Mayweather and his adviser Al Haymon share with the Top Rank boss who are reported to find difficulty being in the same room with one another.
At the end of the day the both fighters seem to recognize the magnitude of this fight, the public interest, and the accompanying payday that would ensue. It is encouraging that negotiations are underway so quickly, and with Schaefer and Arum engaged in talks as we speak we can expect to hear very quickly if there is common ground to share. If there is, it bodes well for the prospects of this mouth-watering fight getting agreed to and signed off on.
Stay tuned.

Floyd has done better numbers, and that’s the name of the game that the promoters built it into.
I think we should have a 40/40 split with the winner taking the 20 difference.
Floyd will easily outbox Manny, the question is will he engage and go for the KO when hes up on points.
He didn’t do that versus JMM, but did pressure Hatton after exposing his lack of boxing skills.

Routing for Mayweather. FM should get the bigger purse; he draws the crowd. If it was not for FM return PacMan would not have done those numbers. Everyone tuned in bc they knew this dream match loomed. FM is a pure boxer – PacMan is a pure fighter. The boxer wins bc of his discipline and mind. The fighter loses bc he is fighting with all heart and absence of mind; he usually makes more mistakes. Don’t be surprised if its totally one-sided for Prettyboy.

You said it adam…
It would be silly for either guy to walk away from this fight because they want 5 or 10 per cent more because the next fight they take would be 10 – 20 million dollars LESS regardless of what split they get with another opponent.
They should both take 50 and enjoy the multi million dollar pay-days.
Both guys make so much money in other endorsement deals I can’t see how they can walk away from this one.

PACWEATHER Says:
Floyd will easily box PaCQuiao?you have got to be crazy,Freddy ROach is not dumb and i know they would have a game plan with what Mayweather can bring on 2010…i would believe MAyweather can easily outbox the Pacman if he had the same strategy over and over, but you know Roach and him always works on a new strategy that they think would work against their opponents, and Mayweather is just another unfinish homework for Freddy and Manny…Pacquiao by late tko or unanimous decision.

the %percentages does not matter…even if team pacman agrees to a 90%-10%split in favor of floyd…this fight wont happen. Why because floyd is afraid to loose. he ducked everyone that could possibly beat him. he never fought true welter weights. pac should just focus on the winner bet mosley vs berto.

50/50. This fight is too good not to happen in our lifetime. If Mayweather insists on a bigger purse claiming he’s got a better draw, he is making the nth excuse not to fight. If someone’s got the right to have a better part of the deal, it’s gotta be the 7 division world champ and the current P4P. Loudmouth MayRunner got no titles, we have to remember that.

Prayer Says:
They just need to split the purse down the middle. PBF would be nothing without Pac. Pac doesn’t need Floyd, he has already cemented his ATG status by the merit of his own hardwork.
Floyd is the best defensive boxer, but what else does he have? Pac has proven to be a complete boxer in his last three fights. He has the thinking ability to box with speed and precision (as seen with ODLH), he has the power to knock out opponents with both hands (as seen with Hatton) and he has the chin and strength to go toe-to-toe with a powerful opponent (as seen with Cotto).
You think PBF can match that? Manny can go straight-in with PBF and have no respect for his power, because he has none! He will put pressure on Floyd for 12 rounds and break his defense down and then destroy his fragile body to a pulp. I say late round TKO in favor of Pac.

Both fighters will satisfy this intruging matchup and look forward to a great performance by both. This is a fight that will give them more investment leverage and endorsements. It will be more than money and fame. It will be history in the making for a worldwide event, that puts a guy from asia, the most populated continent in the planet and with Floyd the most recognize fighter in the US.

Bigkat Says:
Please correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t the Pac/Cotto fight just produce a record number of buys, many more than Floyd’s last fight generated? Of course, many of those would be Cotto fans from Puerto Rico, but it seems to me that Mayweather has NO business demanding more of the revenue than Manny. Manny has just as large, if not larger, a following and he’s exponentially more enjoyable to watch At the very least they should both agree to split the take evenly, and lets get it on!

Floydfan, yes true. Floyd did better numbers than Pacquiao vs. 3 common opponents but I’m sure every boxing fan knows someone who knows somebody who though that Floyd vs Oscar match did not deliver the excitement to casual fans of the sport, that they felt ripped off and promised to never buy PPV again.
That’s a fact.
As far as the Floyd vs. Marquez undercard… Floyd got lucky that GBP had Chris John on the undercard. I can say with confidence that the Floyd/Marquez got a boost in PPV sales from Indonesia.

Nike signed Pac for a $34 million dollar contract. Nike the sports company who sponsors Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods obviously thinks Pac is a world class athlete and someone with mass market appeal. Where’s Floyd’s Nike contract? Where’s Floyd’s Nike billboard in Hollywood? Where’s Floyd’s Filipino tribal inspired apparel and tasseled Nike boxing shoes?
Come to think about, Manny should just fight Mosley if he wins his next fight and say F-U to Floyd. PBF is a chicken shit anyways.

true boxing fans understand that the day of the gladiator is over. The Mike tyson era is done I appreciate when a BOXER gets in the ring and completely dominates his opponent and out classes them Pac has been in to many close fights because he is careless and can’t box. The key is hit your opponent and don’t get hit if you want to see a brawl watch Kembo slice on youtube, there is no art to what that is. You talk about Floyd not having endorsements for what the guys making more money in one fight then pac is making a year in endorsements.

Floyd has a multi Million dollar deal with Reebok.
I get that there’s a lot of Pacquiao fans here. I’m a Pacman fan myself (how can you not be)…
but some of the hate for Floyd is ridiculous.
The guy doesn’t run. He boxes on the back foot and boxes out of the pocket.
The two contrasting styles in this fight are what make it a dream match.
Both of these guys are absolute elite generational talents, and are currently HUGE money makers.
BOTH of them.
There’s no need to be bashing either of them in either of those regards.

your rite seems to be a lot of hate for floyd, i agree with you i dont think floyd runs you dont beat 40 guys by running. i luv the way he fites, he sees his opponent mistakes then goes to work and breaks them down. i really think that if floyd and pacman do fite it will be like the judah fite like zab manny will look good in the early rounds with hand speed and combos but floyd will turn the tide he will solve the puzzle and start getting his shots off stay out of range and counter punch, manny does get a bit wild at times floyds boxing skill is second to none including pacquois.

floyd is a great fighter but that mouth of his is really the reason why he gets lotsa lotsa hate from boxing fans..i think we should do it old school..i know boxing is a business but think about it if pacman and floyd would go 50/50 a prove who is the better boxer…lotsa counter reaction can be said by my statement but hey people y dont they just fight man to man and see who gets what and who is the best…after all thats what floyd is all about right? that he cant be beat by manny, thats a statement….so prove it..pacman vs mayweather 50/50..winner gets bragging rights and honor…forget about the business..surely you werent thinkin of money when you first got into a fist fight as a kid..enough with the smoke and mirrors, with the suits and negotiators, promoters…prove your stuff..dont talk your stuff, its annoying… they will get there money..but honor you take with you when u die..honor isnt in boxing anymore…bring it back..prove your stuff…manny will fight without harsh words, floyd tone down with your arrogance and maybe people will respect you more..i know you dont give a sh@t but at the end of the day you are just a man and this things affect you wether you like it or not…so who will knockout who, we will never know..as for the fans dont be so sure about your stuff, both men have talent and both of em have fists..we dont have the right to say anything coz its not us who is up there in the ring fighting….so pacman/mayweather…2010 lets see…fight of the year…

Floyd is a great boxer, but her really comes off as a big jerk with his mouth. Makes me wish they’d do the fight in the Philippines, I think being in a country that entirely against you would put PBF’s attitude in check. He comes off as someone who needs to get his ass beat.

Alot of fans accuse floyd becuase of his defensive style and he runs his mouth like a knockout artist, which he’s not. He shouldn’t be boasting until it’s done, PERIOD.

Nope. Floyd literally runs. Call it a defensive fighting style, I don’t care. And then he also runs away from real contenders. I’m sorry to say that but the way everybody sees it, the only way he can redeem himself from not fighting Cotto, Mosley, or Margarito before he chickened out into retirement is to finally shut up, sign the deal, and fight PACMAN.

Stalezen Says:
I normally don’t remark. I just read and smile. Alas, I have realized that people don’t differentiate boxing pizazz and excellence from personality. I never compare fighters with their like fights because circumstances and fighters change. As an example, I will use the ODL Hoya fights. When FM fought Oscar, they fought with 10 oz gloves and at 150-152. Thus, Oscar was at a comfortable weight and had pillow gloves. He came in prepared to WIN that fight. I actually haven’t seen Oscar look that good since the Pernell Whitaker fight. If you look back at that fight, thats the best you have seen Oscar in years. In the fight with Manny Pac., it was fought at 147 with 8 oz gloves. Oscar, at his age, his body doesn’t adjust as it once did. Coming into the fight, he looked frail, tired, and dry. That is the result that you got. So its not fair to compare like fights.
Now, is this fight predictable? No, not at all. I think that if it is the exciting fight that everyone wants to see, then Pac was able to get FM to abandon his game plan and fight the fight that Pac. wants to fight. Thus, resulting in a late round KO or TKO of FM. However, if this fight goes the distance, FM will win. It will look a lot like the DLH fight with Pac. moving forward but not getting anything done. I think the fight will look more like the FM and Judah fight. Entertaining early, but wilt down the stretch as FM wears down Pac. Just my thoughts.

And lastly My Comparison: Advantages
November 27th, 2009 at 11:40 pm
Power: Pac
Hand Speed: Pac
Reflex Speed: FM
Boxing skill: FM
Trainer: Even
Ring Generalship: FM
Adaptability: FM
Agression: Pac
Indurance: Even
Heart: Even
Guts: Pac
Since Styles make fights…
Style Advantage: FM (I always have a reason)
Style is comprised of many different areas. But this is determined by past fights and tendencies. Pac has always had trouble with fighters that can fight off the jab and that are natural counter-punchers. Also, he has had trouble adjusting to fighters that fight using boxing angles. FM always has had problems with pressure fighters (minus Baldomir and Gatti who couldn’t really pressure Floyd). But, since FM has experience fighting while walking backwards and FM can diagnose a boxer’s fight plan during and make the adjustments to counter it, this is not unchartered water for him. Paq. normally can get fighters to engage, but will not get the luxury with FM. I think that will frustrate him and he will make mistakes. Thus, the style advantage is FM.
