Boxing is alive and kicking in a post-De La Hoya world!

Several sources are reporting that last weeks’ Pacquiao vs. Cotto “FirePower” PPV card did 1.25 million buys. The fight reportedly did 650,000 buys from cable, and 600,000 buys from Satellite. “FirePower” also set a record in Puerto Rico, selling 110,000 buys on the small island alone.
If these numbers are accurate, it is fantastic news for the sport of boxing, as it marks the first time since 1999 that two separate boxing events have sold more than a million PPV’s in the same year (Lewis vs. Holyfield and De La Hoya vs. Trinidad were the two blockbuster events that year).
2009 also marks the first time that two consecutive PPV’s sold more than a million buys, with the Mayweather vs. Marquez fight doing 1.05 million buys on September 19. Furthermore, Pacquiao vs. Cotto and Mayweather vs. Marquez are the only two non-heavyweight PPV events to reach the million buy mark that didn’t feature Oscar De La Hoya.
Many predicted that De La Hoya’s retirement would leave the sport without a big draw, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. In fact, it seems like boxing is working it’s way back into the public consciousness in a big way, and a showdown between Mayweather and Pacquiao would undoubtedly be the richest fight of all time.

Business Genius Says:
The only way that Pacquiao Mayweather gets done is if it’s a 55/55 split.
That way both guys get the lions share.

This update confirms the number one in boxing status of Manny Pacquiao, meaning he is more popular than Mayweather.

It is just proper to let Mayweather run after Pacquiao. I would suggest that Mayweather should now SHUT his mouth loud mouth out.

Ellerbe is right. Against 3 common opponents, Mayweather has brought in more PPV sales than Manny Pacquiao.
Pacquiao may be more popular internationally but the cold hard fact is that Floyd has brought in more money than Manny Pacquiao.

Kevin Stewart your funny that’s all i can say…
Mayweather is no guy and no paperview sales until he fought ODLH and Hatton which we know both guys ODLH and HATTON attract fans not Mayweather…
and as you can see Floyd jr. vs Marquez was move because of no rib injury coz of poor ticket and PPV sales and rescheduled it on Mexican independence day luckily latinos are free so they watch,,,
Most likely it was Marquez fans not Mayweather and that’s the Bottom line…
and your right pacquiao is known internationally and Mayweather???? who is he??? a picker??? wtf ^_^

Against 3 common opponents? it’s called GLOBAL RECESSION. even if people don’t wanna spend money, they spent it on Manny anyway.

Joe Bruiser Says:
Well that logic may work for De La Hoya and Hatton, but Mayweather sold 1.05 million against Marquez IN the recession, whereas Manny only sold 400K when things were still booming.

MY OPINION…IF MAYWEATHER JR. DECIDES TO FIGHT PACQUIAO, DEFINATLY IS NOT GOING TO BE A CATCH WEIGHT FIGHT, I KNOW MAYWEATHER IS NOT THAT STUPID. HE’S NOT GOING TO COMMIT HIM SELF TO THAT. IT HAS’NT WORK FOR ANYONE ELSE, HE’S NOT GOING TO FALL FOR ROACH’S TRAP AND IF HE DOES I GOT PACQUIAO TO WIN. MAYWEATHER JR. MIGHT SAY YES @ 154LBS. CAUSE HE KNOWS PACQUIAO IS NOT GOING UP THAT FAR, AND IF THEY AGREED @ EXACTLY 147LBS I HAVE MAYWEATHER JR. WINNING.

Ace Freeman Says:
I’d like to see 50/50 at 147 pounds.
It’s a big enough fight that they don’t need to argue over who gets a slightly bigger split. Neither of them can make anywhere near that kind of money against someone else.
I firmly believe there are too many people in the world who want to see this fight happen, and too many people who stand to profit for it not to happen.
It will get done.

MAYWEATHER IS A GREAT FIGHTER, IF HE FIGHTS FOR 145 POUNDS FOR PACQUIAO THE 50/50 SPLIT IS GOING TO BE POSSIBLE AND THAT IS FAIR TO ALL PERIOD!!!
November 23rd, 2009 at 12:27 am
AFTER ALL MAYWEATHER IS THE ONE EAGER TO HAVE PACQUIAO BOUT. MAYWEATHER IS NOT THE CENTER OF ATTRACTION. BUT IF HE DOES FIGHT PUNCH TO PUNCH WITH PACQUAIO THATS THE WAY PEOPLE OF THE WORLD LOVES HIM.
I KNOW HE WOULD BE RUNNING ON THE RING AND ATTACK WHILE THE OPPONENT IS TIRED OF CATCHING HIM. THATS NOT THE PEOPLE WANTS TO SEE, ITS THE POWER PUNCH OF BOTH FIGHTER!
