Gil P. Acosta Says:
And you still call this idiot of a trainer as “top” trainer after the fight? Sonsona was overweight, no defense, no footwork, useless right hand, no stamina, etc. Donaire Sr. even had the courage to predict a 6th round KO! I think Donaire Sr. is destroying Sonsona’s future. The kid became worse under his leash

Ace Freeman Says:
That’s really off the mark Mr. Acosta.
Marvin is 19. A kid. He’s still growing and Ontario, Canada has a same day weigh in.
Marvin has grown 1.5 inches in height since his last fight alone.
Trying to make weight takes a lot out of a fighter, and that is only compounded when there’s a same day weigh-in after a growth spurt. It’s been said Marvin is growing so quickly he will move right from 115 to 122 (bypassing 118). That just goes to show how drastic the situation was for them.
Marvin entered that fight as a dehydrated teenager and still went 12 hard rounds for just the 2nd time in his young career.
I’d hardly call his trainer an idiot as a result of those circumstances. Respectfully, I think that’s very unfair.

Caballero Says:
Thanks again, FightFan.
It’s definitely time for Marvin to move up in weight. This should definitely be a lesson learned and tough adversity for him to gain experience from.
I think a quality nutritionist should be looked at to add to the team.

Mortred Says:
Sonsona does not have what it takes to become great. He’s just lucky ordinary boxer that was given too much attention. I think the kid is overrated. He does not have the strength to last 12 rds. Most of all, he’s so dumb for not making the weight. I dont feel watching him next time, and my friends shares the same.

That’s why he lost big. No more excuses, big heart is nothing if you lost.

Mananggiti Says:
I think, Boxing fans nowadays are more sensitive than before. hehe! Chill out guys. Boxing is not an instant noodles. Sonsona is still growing. A lot of thing to be made in order for him to be an Elite Boxer. Goodluck to you Marvin. Godbless.

Joe Bruiser Says:
Yeah, I think the important thing to realize is that when they signed for this fight Sonsona was 1.5″ shorter than he is now. Growing that much definitely means that his body is going to be several pounds more, and that showed at the weigh in.
It was not something they could have prepared for, as they were trying to bring a different body down to 115.
The fact that the weigh in was the same day, means that he only had a few hours to rehydrate, as opposed to more 30 hours like is the case with fights in the USA.
He will fight at 122 next time, and I’m sure he will be a lot stronger, unless he grows again ;)

Anton Says:
@Mortred, you’re a huge crab and a dumb one too. Have you even seen Marvin’s previous fights? OK, so we’re all dissapointed that things didn’t turn out well for Marvin on Ontario due to unexpected but natural circumstances. Give the kid a break.. Pacquiao had his share of weight issues (and even lost a fight because of it) about a decade ago. The problem with some pinoy boxing “fans” who think they’re so good with the sport is that they think preparing for a fight and making weight is all a supposed to be eas simple as taking a walk in the park.
Get lost crabs! Boxing experts my a$$..

November 23rd, 2009 at 10:05 pm
For the record, the fight did not turn into a circus.
It was not also funny that Sonsona stepped on the weighing scales a kilo over the 115-pound limit.
This caused him to lose his world super flyweight crown without receiving a single punch. FROM : By Recah Trinidad

No problem if Sonsona didn’t make it on his first title defense.Still undefeated on his record by salvaging a draw. When Mayol was not winning as a championship challenger, he was a bum too in some pinoy’s eyes.Donaire is pinoy and a Filipino world champion. This is a great period in boxing for pinoy

warriors. The richest if not one among the richest
Manny Pacquiao boxer/ OFW.
If our country can capitalize in this big break it can be an economic stimulus too,if done properly.

Mortred Says:
Anton is an idiot. The first thing you must learn in defending championship belt is making the damn weight. Haven’t he learned from the experiences of other filipino boxers in the past? that’s very basic. He’s just making many execuses when the truth is he can’t handle that payasito guy. If youre a champion, you should learn how to do things like a champion! I would be happy if he said that he really couldnt handle that guy even without weighty issues, coz thats is the truth. lol

Ace Freeman Says:
Yea you’re right Mortred, Sonsona should have known better than to allow his body to grow 1.5 inches at 19 years old.
Some of the comments here are very poorly thought out.

-
Mortred Says:
One more thing, you said that its just okay coz even packy have the same issue in the past and even lost a fight because of it. What a good advice you got there. That must serve as an example to all our boxer and must not be considered as a good excuse.lol

yamso Says:
many people who commented here know nothing about boxing. its very difficult to loose weight specially when your body is growing up. remember that the second loss of pacquiao to a thai is because he is very drained. he was knocked out by a body shot. he lost his belt because he did not even make the weight. pacquiao is so young at that time and his body is growing up. after that loss, he moved up weight
some people dont understand, boxing is not difficult. you train, you loose weight, its very difficult.
November 23rd, 2009 at 11:23 pm
-
Mortred Says:
If its very very difficult… then why don’t you just play chess instead. Weight is not an issue there. I just hate people making excuses after a lousy performance. In order to grow, you must admit that others are better then you sometimes. Just like packy you littlehead.
November 23rd, 2009 at 11:40 pm
-
Ace Freeman Says:
Mortred weight WAS an issue. No one new Marvin would grow so quickly, and it is not typical to have a same day weigh in. That means just hours before the fight Marvin wasn’t eating and was likely running in the sauna.
You just can’t discount that. It did have a clear effect on him yet (at 19) he still fought twelve hard rounds after having only been that far into a fight once in the past.

bacuzi Says:
Would everyone please move on? Sonsona had a poor performance (regardless of the weight issue or not). Yes, he lost his belt but no harm done other than that, he is still undefeated.
Looking forward for his fight at 122!

Matador Says:
some fans here want to be a boxing expert that infact don’t know boxing. You should understand that when a young kid grow up it is very difficult to maintain your weight. Imagine the added height 1.5 inches. How can you maintain the 115 LBS if you grow 1.5 inches? In his previous fight he is weighing 115 LBS but suddenly he grows taller for 1.5 inches. It is understandable that the 1.5 inches is too much for a young kid to maintain his weight. Just analyze the situation, the kid weigh 117.6 LBS in his last fight. It is very obvious that the 2.6 LBS excess weight is due to the 1.5 inches added height. You must understand that additional height will cause you additional weight.

Ivan "LatinoPorVida" Montiel Says:
I can’t believe what I am reading. I sure hope all these negative comments are not coming from the same FIGHT FANS whom supported Sonsona in his last fight.
To all you people who think Sonsona fought a bad fight you need to realize a couple of things before you speak.
Sonsona fought 12 hard rounds for the second time in his career now that says a lot for a young fighter. Also keep in mind Sonsona hurt his hand in the 3rd round and to last till the end you guys have to give him credit. Sonsona once again proved that he has a solid chin because let me tell you guys he took some big shots. It’s like senor Donaire says Sonsona has a big heart.
I still believe in this kid and will continue to support him. It was said at the post conference that Sonsona will be most likely fighting in the Philipines in his next fight. I sure hope to see Sonsona back in Canada this kid sure brings excitment to boxing.
I wish Sonsona all the best I am sure he will continue to get better.
Also don’t disrespect senor Donaire it’s not his fault Sonsona couldn’t make weight. It’s like Team Sonsona said Marvin is growing he’s only 19 years old. His size difference is actually the first thing I noticed when I first saw him training for this fight.
Once again best of luck Marvelous Marvin Sonsona!

meybe whenever mortred the idiot felt difficulty, he plays chess. is that the best argument you can give? everyone experience difficulties in life. smart people move on and work hard to overcome that difficulties. but when you listed to Mortred’s advice to just play chess if its difficult, you got brain as small as bean like mortred. sonsona just said the reasons why he lost, and he wanted us to understand. mortred’s brain is in his ass hole thats why he will never understand.

Box42 Says:
That is total BS. You do not grow 1.5 inches in two months. These promoters and his trainer are just saying this to make an excuse from his lousy performance. His the champ and first thing you should know is that you have to make weight. I blame sonsona for the lack of discipline and the trainer donaire sr. for the lack of supervision.
I believe the Mexican guy won and i dont think sonsona was dehydrated, i mean come on sonsona was overweight.

“That is total BS. You do not grow 1.5 inches in two months. ”
Says who?
Don’t you remember being in grade school as a young adult, and coming back after summer vacation to see several class mates had a growth spurt and grew taller over two months of summer vacation?
A nineteen year old can certainly grow an inch or two over the course of two or three months.
It’s absolutely ridiculous to claim the weight he couldn’t lose was the result of a lack of training when the guy is a 19 year old. Maybe if he was 34 I could see it, but not with a teenager.

November 24th, 2009 at 3:38 am
boxing is very strenous, heart is always pump up.
with marvin having a big heart is bad,it is abnormal. boxer should have normal heart just like normal people.
we cannot win with a big heart.
-
El Martelio Says:
I predicted Sonsona will have harder times in his future fights after getting the belt from Caritas mainly because he is not yet prepared for the big stage, and I was right. He won the belt against Caritas who is a very weak champion (37 years old to become a champ) with a style tailored-fit for Sonsona.
If Sonsona will be rushed for bigger fights at 122, the kid may end up in a pit. He will be fighting bigger and meaner guys and his lack of experience will be to his detriment.
The best thing is to bring him up slowly again perhaps 1-2 years of fighting at 118-122 with experienced but less risky opponents so that he will be ready to bang with the big boys.

thats weird because i was there at the rama for the last two fights of marvin… i dont think he grew, he look the same to me three months ago.. i took pics beside him from the lopez and hernandez, seems to be the same height… im taller than him and i would notice if he grew….So i dont know where that 1.5 inches issue is coming from…

Getting cocky before the fight, then failing to deliver, then making excuses after the fight — that can’t be a good sign. I hope it humbles him enough to see that, but a draw isn’t going to shake someone’s perspective like a loss does.

I think Sonsona had a wrong trainer, his son just fired him what! It is not like in US that weigh-in is one day before fight night, so even overweight by 5 or 8 lbs you can still rehydrate. They forgot Canada ruling that weigh-in will be at the same day before the fight and look at Sonsona, weak & dehydrated.
Trainer should know this, even how big the heart, if you are feeble, you become so slow and no power in your punch.

Doug Says:
Wow! Some pretty harsh critism on here from some posts. I would think Sonsona would be one hella of a prospect being only 19 with 15 fights. The kid showed maturity beyond his years in his last fight, even though I thought Hernandez pulled off the decision squeaky out the last few rounds.I challenge anyone on here who can find a prospect/contender of world class level at 19years old with only 15 with the ability of Sansona. Also Kyle, it is only in Ontario not all of Canada that has the same day weigh inns. Orion being a first class organization, the Ontario commision in one of the worst in North America.
