Money and bad blood aside, a Pacquiao vs. Mayweather showdown is the only fight that matters for both guys, and Anwar Jamison explains why, only on FightFan.com!

In essence, this is what Manny Pacquiao did on Saturday night. Floyd Mayweather is from Grand Rapids, Michigan, but he makes his home in Las Vegas. Pacquiao came into Las Vegas and committed a terrorist act against a game but overmatched Miguel Cotto. Cotto fought a great fight early and hit Pacquiao with flush shots that would have dropped almost any other welterweight, but not Pacquiao.
To be clear, no one has accused Mayweather of ducking Pacquiao—yet. But he has been accused of ducking Antonio Margarito, Miguel Cotto, and Shane Mosley at various points over the last few years. Whether that is true or not is up for debate, but that doesn’t matter anymore. Mosley defeated Margarito, Cotto defeated Mosley and now Pacquiao has defeated Cotto. Pacquiao has essentially rolled the boxing world up into a ball and swallowed it: one man who cut out all the middle men. They are the last two standing.
Floyd Mayweather, Jr. is under pressure. He is an undefeated, decorated fighter who cares immensely about his legacy. Over the past couple years, he has compared himself to Sugar Ray Robinson and Muhammad Ali, the two boxers usually considered the greatest of all time by boxing fans. On Saturday night, Pacquiao was the one being compared to Robinson and Ali, except he didn’t have to say it himself. It was stated by Emmanuel Steward, one of the most revered trainers in recent boxing history.
Pacquiao put himself in that category the old-fashioned way: by battering the competition in the ring. Mayweather repeatedly tells us about his greatness, but fewer and fewer people believe him. His brief retirement in 2007 coincided with Pacquiao’s meteoric rise onto the American stage, so the comparisons are inevitable. Right now, Mayweather is coming out on the short end of the stick in those comparisons.
This fight has to happen. To be clear, it is not just Mayweather here. Both sides have been posturing for months now since Mayweather’s July return, claiming they don’t need to fight each other. After Pacquiao’s performance, his conditioning coach Alex Ariza said of the anticipated match, “I don’t like that fight,” citing that there is no need to give Mayweather any importance. GIVE MAYWEATHER ANY IMPORTANCE? It’s statements like that that turn people off from the sport of boxing. Newsflash to Ariza: you can’t give Mayweather something he’s had for more than a decade.
Pacquiao has turned himself into a modern day Superman, or Bruce Lee, or rather Pac-man. The world is his oyster. Mayweather chose to be the villain of boxing. He embraced it. Now he has a legitimate superhero to wage war with. We don’t want to hear about the money.
Floyd Mayweather Jr., your life is calling.
You’ve been telling us that you are one of the greatest fighters of all time and you want us to believe you. You have been accused of ducking other big fights, and you have denied it and instead cited the politics of boxing. OK, well you can wipe all of the talk away with one fight against one man. If you fight and defeat Manny Pacquiao, you will have earned the right to say anything you want. Sure there will still be a few critics in the background saying, “well he didn’t fight Margarito, he never fought Cotto, he never fought Sugar Shane,” but anyone with an ounce of sense in their head will quickly shut those people up and remind them that defeating Pacquiao, at this point in his career, is greater than the sum of all those other fights rolled up into one. This is the big one.
Floyd, you want to be cemented in boxing history as one of the greatest ever? It’s yours. One fight against one man, who just happens to be one helluva man.

if i was floyd heres what i would do.
forget about 24/7 just a distraction. I would move my camp to big bear, i would bring my dad into camp as a defensive coach and use rodger as offensive trainer, and train my fucking arse off. i would consider useing winky wright, edwin valero, and zab judah as my sparring partners. And if i was floyd i would be turning this fite into a boxing match jab ,counter and move do not brawl with pacman lets face it have we ever really seen floyd out boxed over 12 rounds.

why is that each of the tough boxer(mosley, cotto margarito,& pacquiao) fight each other, and mayweather dont fight a welterweight, not even 1 of thouse 4.but consider the 1 of the 2 great now,1 of the last 2 man standing.who did he beat that made him great.his last fight odlh, hatton, marquez.?he just made himself great by talking but himself, and famous.he may be good but he was never tested, how can he b great..

If you acknowledge Pacman as the no.1 rated welterweight today, it is insensible to put mayweather against him this early. Remember, floyd just came out of retirement. He should fight first the winner of berto-mosley bout. Becoz, if you insist that floyd immediately fight pacman, it appears that pacquiao cotto match was just an eliminator.. with the winner having earned the right to fight floyd..

I hope Manny kicks his ass. I respect Floyd the fighter but he has never put it on the line like Manny. Floyd pretty much has always dodged moving up in weight the way Manny has. I don’t see Floyd calling out Bernard Hopkins. He never called out Winky. Floyd until now, has always fought the people he figured he could beat. I never heard Floyd call out Roy Jones when he was good. Floyd is a good fighter, but he’s always been very cautious about who he fought. I may be wrong but i bet he takes an ass whippen against Manny. Floyd can’t run now. He is fast but Manny is faster. Floyd has no power and will not stand toe to toe. Thats why he will get beat. Manny unlike everyone Floyd has fought will walk through him and beat him down.

AKITA,
I cannot agree less.
LOUDMOUTH Mayweather can’t accept he’s scared of all the real fighters he has dodged all these times. His talks about “money not enough” the are all B@))$#!T. For all we know, these are excuses not to take on these real fighters. Changing his name to “Money” is testament to that. But u know what, he is running out of excuses that’s for sure. Enough pressure will be built for him to finally face the BEST, which is something he still is not.

i have read that mayweather was calling out manny in maxboxing.com. thats good! hey you, floyd “big mouth” mayweather, stop telling that manny is making alibis’ because before hand he already said that he wants to fihgt you. the problem was you make excuses like 60-40 or manny doesn’t say YES everytime he would be asked if he wants to fight mayweather fuck! this is all i can say, you talk too much! i have watch several of your interviews and same thing, everytime you’re being asked if you want to fight manny your answer was its up to my promoter, i didn’t hear you say YES either you bigmouth! well, its okay for manny to say those words cause he’s very humble and down to earth not like you, arrogant, bastard, conceited person. manny has already proved the world that he’s the great and you cant take that away from him what ever you do coz manny fought the best toughest bigger fighter in the sports and you just avoiding those guys in your division, thinking it would be a threat to your record. well, if you really want to fight manny, stop making excuses. fight equally, this time its not about money, its about whos really the best, the no. 1.

Come on man, Alex Ariza is right about not giving PBF any importance, because all Floyd is now, is about talking, bragging and being obnoxious. After he fought Corrales, at the lighter weights ages ago, he has never fought anybody who is not an underdog against him. And to think that you are implying that he should be mentioned in equal esteem as the Pacman, come on, that is too much of a stretch. They are poles apart. The only saving grace this guy is his athleticism. That will not be able to hold a candle against MAnny’s relentless, two-fisted attack, with speed equal if not faster than PBF. And one thing is really most definite, a punching power that PBF will be petrified about. You see, Floyd has always ducked Cotto, Mosley and Margarito (he even went into retirement when he was cornered to fight Cotto). Its because FLoyd knows that they are a lot more powerful puncher than he will ever be! Cotto after the fourth round (of their Nov 14 bout)realized that his best punch combo is something Manny will just eat for breakfast… with gusto! HArdly making a dent on Manny’s game. And that he himself (Cotto) realizes that fully loaded power shot from Manny will at least send him to the canvass and leave him dazed and wobbly. Its the only reason he started to run in the second half of their fight. Can you imagine the same punch hitting Floyd? And before that, you can be sure that Manny will be landing even stronger and more powerful shots on PBF because Manny will not respect any of the flurries from Mr. Mayweather. One thing I can guarantee about that dream fight, it will probably be the most boring fight for Manny. We got a sneak preview of that last Saturday. Its the fight between PAcquiao and Cotto, after Cotto realized he cannot take a fully-loaded Pacquiao punch and opted to ride his bike the rest of the way. PBF vs PAcman. We will Floyd running the whole night.

Anwar Jamison Says:
Rommel,
I appreciate your comment, but nuthugger, no. How about realist? If you are truly a boxing fan, and by being on this site I assume you are, then how can you actually try to completely discredit Mayweather’s career? Seriously.
If you thought Tom Brady was an asshole, you would still not try to deny that he is a great quarterback. No matter how much you hate the man, please stop trying to pretend he’s not great boxer. That makes you look a little ill-informed.
As for having never fought anybody who isn’t an underdog to him. Uh…Rommel, that can tend to happen when you’re the pound for pound best fighter in the world for close to a decade. They would kinda have to go to another planet to find somebody to be a favorite over the pound for pound best.
Neither one of these guys are my favorite fighter so I consider myself pretty objective on this one. Why is it never mentioned that Floyd went up to 154 to fight Oscar De la Hoya? Yet, already Freddie Roach is saying he wants the fight at a catchweight of 145…again.
Now as for Mr. Miguel Cotto. Helluva fighter. But how many times have we seen him getting hit with flush, brain-rattling shots? Against Zab Judah, yes. Against Shane Mosley, yes. Against Margarito, yes. Against Clottey, yes.
Cotto is an offensive fighter. His game plan was effective if only Pac-man would have fallen. He hit Pac-man with enough that if Pac’s chin was weaker, he would have lost within the first 4 rounds.
Now, how many times have you seen Floyd get hit flush? Call it boring if you want but sir, Floyd is a defensive specialist. He can fight inside and outside.
How many times did you see Miguel Cotto clinch in this fight? I counted one desperation clinch in probably round 11. Same thing against Margarito. For some reason, Cotto never learned to fight inside. With Pacquiao being smaller, he could have easily tied Pac up to slow down the beating, but it’s not in his skill set. All he knows is to fight, fight, fight. I admire him for it.
On the other hand, Floyd Mayweather is a technician sir. It doesn’t matter whether or not he can hurt Pac-man. He doesn’t have to. All he has to do is win. Did you see the percentage of punches Marquez landed on Floyd? How many did he land on Pacquiao? Hmmmm.
Also, Floyd never “runs.” Watch more closely. There is a difference between being “on a bike” in full backpedal as Cotto was, and being in a defensive posture, using footwork to move in and out of range. Find me one example of Floyd “running.”
This is not one superhuman fighter against some loud-mouthed, phony as you and some other people are trying to make it seem. This is a fight between two great fighters. Assuming the fight is made, Iook forward to a great fight.

Johnny Carr Says:
I think the reason Mayweather retirement was to save his undefeated record. As you can see after Hatton fight, you will notice that the only option for Mayweather to avoid defeat was to retire because if he will still be the champion chances are he could fight a strong boxer like Cotto or Mosley which might stain his undefeated record. He has no option if a world title fight will be sanction by the boxing commission against Cotto/Mosley/Margarito. We will know if he is really the best if he will fight PACMAN with 45/45 share and winner takes the remaining 10%.

Joe Bruiser Says:
Mayweather has fought several bigger guys than him, and never asked them to come down to a catchweight.
He brings a whole different style to a Pacquiao fight, one that Pac has never faced,
He is also the absolute master of that style.
That’s what makes this fight so intriguing: Pacquiao’s speed, power, and aggressiveness against Mayweather’s speed, defense, and counter punching ability.
Mayweather’s never faced someone with the ability to follow-up on his shots like Pacquiao, and Pacquiao has never faced as good a boxer as Mayweather.
Castillo’s aggression gave Mayweather problems and Marquez’ boxing ability gave Pacquiao problems.
So, with this fight, both fighters finally have an opponent that will test them beyond any other.

Since Floyd’s only leverage is his UNDEFEATED record and flaunts it like a Ph.D. Diploma, there’s one figthter of his weight who can match that criteria and that is Julio Cessar Chavez Jr. JR vs JR! What more can anyone ask for!!!!!
November 18th, 2009 at 3:58 pm
But no, Mayweather cannot NOW say that he is the Marquee because, for sure, Pacquiao-Cotto will top him in PPV sales. JR cannot say he is the champion because he doesn’t have any belt, except the one holding his pants up.
STOP FLAUNTING THAT DIPLOMA, Mayweather Jr, because that’s a Dime-a-Dozen. It is now leverage. Now, fall back in line and wait to be called! Don’t dictate, you’re a fraud!

(by Manny Pacquiao)They asked you if you’ll fight me
And you choked on your reply

Than mislead you with a lie
And who am I to judge you,
On what you say or do
The fans are now beginning
To see the real you…And someday when we tats
My LEFT will be too much
That you have to close your eyes
Where do you hide?
I wanna pound you til you’re white
‘Til your face breaks down and cry
I wanna beat you
‘Til you dream and say, goodnight. You think you are a strategist
That you can insult my pride
But through your insecurities
You’re ZERO loss seemed right
You’re just another fighter
So far from what is true
An overrated boxer
Who never gives his dueAnd someday when we tats
My RIGHT will be too much
That you have to close your eyes
Where do you hide?
I wanna pound you til you’re white
‘Til your face breaks down and cry
I wanna beat you
‘Til you dream and say, goodnight. At times I’d like to break you
And drive you to your knees
The fans would like to watch you
And see your first defeatYour huggers understand you
And we know how hard they try
I’ve watched your Dad protect you
And your Uncle loves to smile :biglaugh:My coach thinks your a loser
Still searching for a break
You think your odds are better
But then the public bets AGAINST!And someday when we tats

Yall just hate that the man is great. I didnt hear anyone say anything when Marquez wanted to fight Manny the 3rd time n he Ducked him. Yall dont talk about how Manny only beat marquez by 1 point. This aint what Manny wants. He likes being in the winner circle so he dont want to fight Mayweather. He has to get close just to hit money and I see him gettin the same treatment pp Marquez got.

supergflexxx Says:
Here how I see it mayweather is a technician to say the least but could he impose his technical tempo on pacman?he would do fine with his defensive style and quick hands if manny were a orthodoxed one dimensional fighter but he isn’t and that’s what could be a problem for mayweather. roger mayweather says they don’t preplan fighting strategy but for this fighter that will be a great mistake. Manny has improved tremendously over the years and has mastered his craft with great guidence from roach. Floyd likes to counter after a 1 2 and then move to the side and counter quickly again taking advantage of his footwork for a quick counter upon the forward momentum of his opponent. This doesn’t work with someone like manny. Manny will go 1 2 3 4 5 6 7. Floyd my blck 1 2 and even 3 but when he steps to the side manny will be on him like a siamese twin. With punches galore because he is fast everywhere. manny is a boxer, a puncher, a brawler, ko’er and a thinker. I never seen floyd brawl with anyone but manny is battle tested in everyway. Floyd has fast hands and great defensive footwork and technique. Manny has faster hands and faster feet as well as the ability to change momentum at the drop of a dime(up down side to side).freddie roach said that manny will walk right through him. I tend to believe freddie since everything he has said came true exactly like he said it would playout in mannys last 4 or so bouts. If the strategy is aggression then I don’t see how manny can lose. Mayweather would spend all his time blocking punches with little or no chance to counter because of the angles, foot and hand speed of manny, not to mention stamina and punching power. Mayweathers game is about discouraging his opponents by not giving them anything to hit and changing the mentality of his opponets. Then in round 6 or 7 , start leading with the right hand after he has broken his opponents strategy and spirit changing it to one of desparation. If floyd gets caught with a few punches early, his pride of embarrassment may get him hurt badly if he dosent keep his head about him. It will be one for the ages and could single handedly revive the sport and put boxing front and center once again

Pacman is relentless. I don’t see how Loudmouth can block all flurries the PACMAN will be hurling at him. Manny comes in 4,5,..8 punch combos at different angles with magnificent speed and strength. Loudmouth aka defense specialist may very well block 2 punches but that’s it. He’ll be eating leather mitts most of the time. Unless of course, he runs like a scared cat.
