Early results from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas
By Joe Bruiser (14-Nov-2009)

Yuri Foreman W UD12 Daniel Santos

Yuri Foreman won a spirited twelve round unanimous decision over Daniel Santos moments ago at the MGM Grand on the “Firepower” televised undercard. Foreman boxed well from the outset and scored a stunning knockdown in the middle rounds. Santos, who came in to the ring as a light heavyweight, looked rusty and sluggish. Using his superior hand speed and some clever angles, Foreman seemed to have an edge in the majority of the rounds. With another knockdown in Round 12 for good measure, Foreman put the fight out of reach, winning on all three official cards by scores of 116-110, and 117-109 (X2). With the victory Foreman captured the WBA junior middleweight title and improved to 28-0 (8 KOs).

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. W UD10 Troy Rowland

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. pounded out a twelve round work-man like unanimous decision over Troy Rowland in the co-main event at the MGM in Las Vegas, Nevada. The bout was somewhat anticlimactic in light of the main event on tap, but Chavez used his height and reach to his advantage to largely out-box Rowland for the majority of the bout. After twelve rounds were complete Chavez was ahead on all three cards comfortably in what was a competitive fight.

Alfonso Gomez W TD6 Jesus Soto Karass

Former Contender star Alfonso Gomez captured a sixth round technical decision victory over the rugged Jesus Soto Karass moments ago at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas when the bout was stopped early due to a cut Gomez suffered after an accidental clash of heads. Gomez started out strong landing the cleaner punches. Soto Karass lost a point in both Rounds 3 and 4 for low blows. Gomez suffered the cut in Round 3 and the bleeding got worse as the rounds wore on. In the sixth stanza the referee stopped the bout on the advice of ringside physicians and the fight went to the scorecards. Gomez was ahead 57-55 (x2) and 58-54 giving him a sixth round technical decision victory. With the win Gomez improved to 21-4-2.

Eden Sonsona destroys Eilon Kedem in two

Super Bantamweight Eden Sonsona of the Philippines came out with guns blazing at the MGM Grand. Sonsona dropped Eilon Kedem with a hard straight left hand early and immediately went for the kill, but was not able to finish off Kedem before the end of Round 1. Referee Joe Cortez warned Kedem that he needed to see something from him in Round 2 or he was going to stop the bout, and that’s exactly what happened. Sonsona went right back to work landing hooks and uppercuts and Cortez waved off the bout seconds into the second round. With the victory Sonsona imporves to 14-3 (4 KO).

Matt Korobov shuts out James Winchester

Middleweight prospect Matt Korobov outworked and outlanded James Winchester over six rounds at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The judges had Korobov (8-0, 6 KO) winning every round. It is second fight in a row that Korobov has gone the distance after winning his first six bouts by knockout.
