Cotto’s Trainer Joe Santiago: “With all the people picking Pacquiao it gives Miguel extra motivation and fire to win!”
By Ace Freeman (20-Oct-2009)

Joe Santiago, head trainer of WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto, spoke to international media earlier today on a conference call to discuss the upcoming Nov. 14 mega fight between his charge and pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao!

Joe Santiago: “Before Miguel fought Carlos Quintana a few years ago many people were picking Quintana to win and that really motivated Miguel. The night of the fight he was so focused to prove people wrong that it really gave him a boost in the fight. We’re seeing that again with the way so many people are picking Pacquiao to win on Nov. 14. Miguel is driven by the people saying Pacquiao will beat him. It’s extra motivation and he is coming with fire because people are saying he can’t win.”

.

On Miguel Cotto’s Training Camp:

“It’s been a really hard camp and all of our objectives have met. We’re having a great camp and Miguel is looking good. I think moving to camp to Tampa was a smart move and we’re very concentrated and focused. Everyone on the team is very confident about what we’re doing. Miguel has done everything asked of him in camp. Each week we’ve had a game plan and everything has been accomplished. We’re still sparring and working very hard this week and are just about set to begin toning it down as we get closer to the fight but we will continue to work with an intense focus. With Joe Chavez (cut-man) being here for the entire camp it has really been a benefit. I think his experience will help us on the night of the fight. Everyone on our team is on the same page and we are confident of victory.”

On Cotto’s weight:

“Right now we’re on track to make the weight. We’ve been working hard and all the monitoring shows we are on pace. The commission has been monitoring and everything and we are right on track. We will be at 145 before the fight, no problem.”

On the Margarito fight:

“As far as we’re concerned Margarito fight is over. Miguel is as hungry as he’s ever been and his confidence is good. In the last fight with Clottey, I don’t think a lot of fighters would have stood up to what Clottey was bringing with the cut Miguel had… but Miguel did and he pulled through.”

Cotto is extremely motivated for this fight:

“Before Miguel fought Carlos Quintana a few years ago many people were picking Quintana to win and that really motivated Miguel. The night of the fight he was so focused to prove people wrong that it really gave him a boost in the fight. We’re seeing that again with the way so many people are picking Pacquiao to win on Nov. 14. Miguel is very driven by the people saying Pacquiao will beat him. It’s extra motivation and he is coming with more fire because people are saying he can’t win.”

What this fight means for Cotto:

“I think both fighters are coming to show they are the best. We feel Miguel is the best fighter in the world and when the night comes and he does beat Manny everyone will see Puerto Rico has the best fighter in the world. Miguel has shown he’s willing to fight anyone and he’s beat them all with one exception. We feel all he has to do is beat Pacquaio and it will prove he is the best fighter in the world. A win over Pacquiao would be huge, not only for Miguel and I but for everyone in Puerto Rico.”

On Manny Pacquiao and the fight on Nov. 14:

“I wouldn’t question Pacquiao’s last opponents. They might not have had their best nights against Manny but they are quality fighters. Cotto is at his best, and he is out to show that against Manny. It will be a very tough night for Pacquiao because winning means so much to Miguel. There is so much desire. Miguel Cotto showed a lot about his will to win in the Clottey fight. He will show this against Manny as well but you will also see his speed and power in this fight. This will be one of Miguel’s best performances (against Manny). I think Miguel has shown people can deal with speed in fighting Mosley and Judah. People don’t think Miguel can stay with Manny and his speed and rhythm but I think he will and it will surprise people.”

Boxing’s No. 1 pound-for-pound king and the reigning Fighter of the Year, Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao, and the pride of Puerto Rico and three-time world champion, Miguel Cotto, will be loaded for bear when they rumble in the mega-event of the year – FIRE POWER: PACQUIAO vs. COTTO – for Cotto’s World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title and the first-ever World Boxing Council (WBC) Diamond Belt. 1. Gary P Says:

LOL… if you need motivation to win you will lose. It’s your fucking job to win Cotto. There is no shame in losing to the best. You can continue to beat the Judah’s, Quintana’s and Clottey’s of the world. If you’re looking for one more good payday seek out a rematch with Margarito, Mosley or fight a young up-and-coming Berto.

You will be demolished by Manny. I hate to say it. Manny is too good right now and you’re too slow and easily hit with a questionable chin. Chop Chop Corley for Christ’s sake. C’mon man.

  2. Jane Says:

If you know who Manny is and what he has done with his previous fights, you should be scared to be defeated.

  3. floydfan Says:

One more payday lol the guys only 28 this is just the begining for Cotto…Everyone knows Pacquiaos looking for a way out…Lets just hope he fights Floyd before he runs off into the sunset…Pacman/Prettyboy 2010…Fingers crossed Pactards

  4. entradero Says:

WINNING IS NOT ENOUGH MOTIVATION??AND AGAINST MANNY?
MIGUEL,JUST MAIL IT IN.ON SECOND THOUGHT, SHOW UP, DO YOUR BEST AND HOPE IT IS GOOD ENOUGH TO WARRANT A REMATCH.

  5. Gary P's daddy Says:

Gary P.. my boy get a clue.. Your actually bringin up the Corley fight.. you mean the fight in which Cotto was killing himself to make weight and was entering the ring dehydrated, but still managed to stop the guy.. wake up dude. Manny is in for the fight of his life. This is a pick em fight both guys have power.

  6. Mi Weather fan Says:

motivation is a fucking fool. Many believe that this word gives them extra strenght. i doubt. this is just an alibi of the many just to give a boost on them.
On Cotto, to ensure your victory, use your old and new dirty tactics. GIve Manny a big bang on the 1st round. Make him (Manny) sure he’ll feel the pain, for this will distract his focus. Never mind if you will be deducted on points on this round. Go go Mayweather

  7. rasheed514 Says:

well it’s good to have motivation, it’s just like inspiration huh! but to sum it up, much better for you to train hard and prepare yourself for the big day, but, no dirty tricks please!

  8. jindevil Says:

i dont think cotto can apply dirty trick on manny. the way i see his all fight every oppenent he encountered and applying dirty trick they all kiss the canvass.i bet you that.

  9. Ferdie Says:

Of course, Cotto should be motivated. And who is Carlos Quintana? Is he the pound for pound king? Last time I heard, he got KO’d by Paul Williams.

Guys like that are flashes in the pan. Unlike Manny, Only Marquez was able give him fits but at 130 lbs. where Manny was having a hard time making the weight.

However, if Marquez will fight Manny at 140 lbs. that would be a different story.

  10. Chocha Says:

    manny will lose puckers

  11. Chocha Says:

ferdie but paul williams lost to quintana also

  12. mfongo Says:

Joe Santiago is now training our man Cotto to be more quicker. Cotto will be at 144 lbs. He’ll be lighter, quicker, and faster. Cotto now will shock everyone. This is the time to be quick and fast.

  13. milagros solidarios Says:

On Nov 14, 2009, Miguel Cotto will crush the testicles of manny pacquiao!

    Go Team Cotto!

  14. carlos Says:

Manny will kiss the canvass on ala Hatton, I pity him, he’s biting more than he could chew………..mark my words……..on Nov 14 Cotto will emerge with his hands raise via KO……..

  15. PTA Says:

Pacquiao by 5th Round KO the earliest! UD 12 is the longest! My best number on Nov 14!

  16. Mactaczink Says:

I hope that this Joe Santiago can still remember all what he just said in this report after the fight….same as others…Joe may shout “Cotto was over trained”, “cotto failed to follow his instruction”, cotto had problem with cuts”….after the fight, he’ll start thinking for the excuses…

  17. theBLUR Says:

“With all the people…”, said santiago, is he sourgraping when not all cotto’s countrymen picked him to win the fight vs manny? what a funny man he is. Why don’t he ask his ward cotto the reason of his cheatings? i’ll tell you what: because cotto and his team are losers. that’s the reason why. only losers resort to cheating.

  18. theBLUR Says:

yeah, that’s right. cotto will emerge victorious vs manny pacquiao by crushing his testicles and face with hardened gloves. hahaha! what an idiot boxer cotto is with equally idiot team. hahaha!

  19. Bryson Bell Says:

What previous fights did Manny have? The one where he can knocked out by a body shot? The two where can got outboxed by two other boxers? Morrales an Marquez (twice). Cmon man Manny is good at beating up old, dehydrated, past their prime fighters. I wont be surprised if Roach throws in the towel after this first round just to protect Manny, so he can fight another bum another day an win his 7th title that way.

  20. 151 proof Says:

don’t be talking about that cotto is a loser. he only lost one time to a cheater.

  21. Anonymous Says:

Dehydration is such a lame ass excuse. Up to the point when Chop Chop rocked Cotto, Cotto looked strong. As I recall Cotto went on to fight 4 more Jr. Welterweight fights after his home town decision to Chop Chop. My point is Chop Chop is a pillow puncher and no where near as fast or elusive as Pacquiao. Cotto will get tagged all night and eventually knocked out late, probably 9-10.

Will you excuse be that Cotto was dehydrated when he loses to Pacquiao 11-14-2009 Cotto Fans?

  22. victor Says:

Cotto is a true champion. If Pacquiao wants to win its not going to be by decision. When he lost to margarito it was a questionable fight. But like I said margarito had to earn it even if he cheated.

  23. Ace Freeman Says:

“Dehydration is such a lame ass excuse. Up to the point when Chop Chop rocked Cotto, Cotto looked strong. As I recall Cotto went on to fight 4 more Jr. Welterweight fights after his home town decision to Chop Chop.”

First off, Cotto stopped Corely, it wasn’t a decision. Second, one of the four fights after that saw him get rocked all over the ring by Ricardo Torres, who he also came back to stop.

I wouldn’t call it an excuse when he won those fights, but fighters do sometimes have trouble with their legs and punch resistance when sucking to make weight.

Two of the other fights post Corley were against light punchers in Malignaggi and Branco.

“My point is Chop Chop is a pillow puncher”

I think this is a bit unfair as well. Ask Floyd Mayweather about Chop Chop’s power. He rung Floyd harder than pretty much anyone else ever has.

I wouldn’t call him a big puncher, but he’s got some pop for sure.
