VIDEO Interview
By Ace Freeman (26-Jul-2009)
We caught up with top trainer Roger Mayweather at the Mayweather gym in Las Vegas and got his thoughts on Manny Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto, and a potential bout between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr! Only on FightFan.com!

FF: Roger what do you think of Manny Pacquiao signing to fight Miguel Cotto?
RM: I don’t think he’s going to beat Cotto. If he does beat Cotto, I’ll be amazed. That will tell me how good he really is. He’s fighting a guy who can make the weight, and who’s a pretty good puncher. I’ve got to see him beat Cotto… I’ve got to see it with my own eyes.
Obviously if Pacquiao is taking the fight with Cotto, he thinks he can beat him. That should tell you right there… for a little guy, he’s got some balls! Fighting Miguel Cotto… De La Hoya… Ricky Hatton. All of those guys are much bigger than he is. I thought Pacquiao would lose to Ricky Hatton, and obviously I was wrong. He’s obviously a better fighter than I thought he was.
FF: FightFan.com here at the Mayweather gym with Roger Mayweather. Roger I wanted to start out by reflecting back on an interview we did with you earlier in the year where you went out on a limb and predicted that Shane Mosley would “Whoop Antonio Margarito’s ass.” What do you have to say about that?
RM: There you go. And what happened? It was just like I told you!
FF: It was particularly interesting because your prediction was pretty bang on when a lot of people though Margarito would win that fight…
RM: Well most people don’t know shit about boxing so it never really matters what ‘a lot of people think’. You get a lot of people saying things because they saw one fighter beat someone else. People will look at a fighter score a decent win over someone and think it means they’ll go on to beat someone who’s really skilled.
Remember that Shane Mosley is a real fighter. He’s fought some good fighters and he had a good amateur career. The only reason he didn’t go to the Olympics was because of Vernon Forrest… and Vernon Forrest was a good fighter. He just happened to have the style to beat Mosley. But Mosley is a good fighter. Look at how he beat De La Hoya twice. He beat a lot of good fighters and he just beat Fernando Vargas twice too. That just goes to show you what kind of fighter he is, and why styles make fights.
FF: What do you think about Manny Pacquiao fighting Miguel Cotto?
RM: I really don’t know if Pacquiao will beat Cotto. I look at that fight… and I don’t believe Pacquiao will beat Cotto.
FF: Well let me ask you this, because you’ve told me about a few fighters you didn’t think Pacquiao would beat. Earlier this year you sat here and asked me “What the fuck is Pacquiao going to do to De La Hoya?”
RM: That’s a different case though, because De La Hoya had to drop weight. He didn’t beat the De La Hoya that my nephew beat. He beat a De La Hoya that was under-weight.
FF: All right, that’s fair…
RM:I think De La Hoya beat himself because he dropped that weight. De La Hoya was all about the money, he figured the dude was too small to beat him… so he dropped too much weight. He ended up dropping to 145 and that sucked his (strength) out. That’s why Oscar lost. It wasn’t as much about Pacquiao beating De La Hoya as it was De La Hoya beating himself by dropping too much weight.
FF: All right well what about the Ricky Hatton fight. You picked Hatton to beat Pacquiao as well did you not?
RM: I did think that Ricky Hatton would whoop Pacquiao.
FF: Do you think you may have sold Pacquiao a bit short in the past?
RM: I certainly did against Ricky Hatton because I thought he would beat Pacquiao. Obviously, I was wrong.
FF: Let me ask you this then… how good is Manny Pacquiao in the grand scheme of things?
RM: Obviously he’s a much better fighter than I thought he was. Regardless of how he beat De La Hoya, he still beat De La Hoya. Regardless of how he beat Ricky Hatton, he beat Ricky Hatton. Obviously, he’s a better than I thought he was.
FF: What about his skills? You’re big on head movement and defense and he’s been doing those things well. Has he impressed you recently with his skills?
RM: (Shakes his head no) He fought a wild fighter in Ricky Hatton who doesn’t have any skills.
FF: And as you mentioned earlier, you don’t think Manny Pacquiao is going to beat Miguel Cotto?
RM:I don’t think he’s going to beat Cotto. If he does beat Cotto, I’ll be amazed. That will tell me how good he really is. He’s fighting a guy who can make the weight, and who’s a pretty good puncher. I’ve got to see him beat Cotto… I’ve got to see it with my own eyes.
FF:Let me ask you a bit of a hypothetical question here. All the money and politics aside… do you think your nephew Floyd Jr. is going to fight Manny Pacquiao some day? If I’m a betting man is the smart money on that fight happening at some point?
RM: I sure hope so! If Manny Pacquiao beats Cotto, I know it’s going to happen. That would be the biggest fight in the world for Pacquiao. It would also be the biggest fight in the world for my nephew if they were to fight in the near future.
But as you say… it all depends on what happens between Pacquiao and Cotto. Obviously if Pacquiao is taking the fight with Cotto, he thinks he can beat him. That should tell you right there… for a little guy, he’s got some balls!
FF:He’s up ten weight divisions from where he started his career… he has six titles in six weight divisions…
RM: He’s got some serious balls. Fighting Miguel Cotto… De La Hoya… Ricky Hatton. All of those guys are much bigger than he is.

Ivan "LatinoPorVida" Montiel Says:
Interesting interview Ace, good questions you put out for Roger Mayweather
Roger is funny but at least he is honest with everything he says like De La Hoya beating himself by dropping weight now that is a true statement I agree with Roger 100%.
However I disagree with Roger saying Cotto will beat Pacquaio. Again as much as I support Cotto I must say I honestly feel Cotto is still haunted by Antonio Margarito. In Cotto’s last fight against Clottey it was clear to see that Cotto was having flash backs of Margarito lucky for Cotto that Clottey was not busy enough or else who knows what could have happened to Cotto.
As far as Pacquiao versus Mayweather Jr I agree with Roger by saying it will be the biggest fight hopefully these two fighters will meet in the near future!

I don’t think that weight issue is the key factor why Manny beat De La Hoya,, Why everybody can’t accept that Manny beat him because he is a better and strong puncher, in my view Manny slow down Oscar because he was hit and get hurt in early rounds., He was lucky that Manny can’t hit him with a solid punch because of the hieght advantage of De La Hoya. Hatton got all that solid KO punch., and I believe Manny will beat Cotto by TKO, because Cotto can move and have a better defense compare to Hatton, but stamina will slowdown Cotto and that is main factor of the fight.

magic Says:
i disagree with the weight issue as the factor why manny beat dela hoya, it was simply because of frustration and not weight drain, dela hoya gave up fighting because he cant find pacman where he wanted him to be, pacman run circles around dela hoya with punching here and there, the movements were so swift that you can see dela hoya spinning, swinging wildly hitting only air. you can see in the face and almost feel the frustration of dela hoya during that fight and eventually he must have realized its futile to continue and decided to quit on the stool instead of on his butt on the floor.

Tyrone Says:
Good interview, Ace. I happen to agree with Ivan about Cotto still haunted by the Margarito loss. I think he took such a beating that he won’t ever be the same mentally or physically. And for the record, I do believe Margarito had loaded gloves that night but we’ll save that discussion for another time. He is still very strong and have very good skills but I don’t think he can cope with Pacquiao’s speed and improved footwork and lateral movement. Of course, Cotto has a puncher’s chance and it is boxing so anything can happen. But, Pacquiao is on the very top of his game and I see an exciting match that will end in a Pacquiao TKO victory. By the way, nice to see one of the Mayweathers giving props to another fighter. Doesn’t happen too often.

Roger referring to Pacquiao, “He’s got some serious balls. Fighting Miguel Cotto… ”
Makes you wonder what can be said of his nephew, Floyd, for not fighting any of the top welters in Cotto, Mosley, Marg or Williams before and after he “retired”.

Ace Freeman Says:
I don’t think that thought (of Floyd Jr. vs. Cotto) even entered Roger’s mind, because I think he feels Floyd will be fighting the winner of Pacquiao vs. Cotto early next year with the money that fight will have on the table.
There is another part to my interview with Roger that we will run in the coming weeks that focuses on Floyd Jr. vs. Marquez, as well as more insight and analysis into a potential Pacman vs. Floyd fight.

i also dont think that weight will be the issue in this fight..looking back in the cotto-clottey fight, cotto weighed 146lbs.. that’s just 1 lb. above the stipulated weight in nov. 14 fight..i think its not a big deal after all…this is still a legit welter bout..no excuses

It’s better not to bad mouth Pacquiao or he whipped your ass without mercy like Hatton.

That was a good responce from Roger Mayweather even thou he still posses the big pride of the talking trash dockers he is more better than the father & son. To me he will realized that brown skin should be respected even thou it happen to appear by centuries but it really pours & no one will stop him even Shane Mosley. Remember his name as characterized by his alias The Destroyer & now The Pacman but the real Manny Pacquiao just happen to be a humble guy with humble beggining & grace that always want to make people happy by fightin in the ring whoever you maybe.

Steely Says:
All this crap about ODLH beating himself is just like what I said, plain bull crap. An excuse that even Oscar now is buying. I have watched that fight hundred of times to see what the so called boxing experts are saying about a dehydrated OLDH and I can attest that I don’t know what they are talking about. Oscar’s hand speed was just as fast in the last around as it was in the first. I did not see any sign of fatigue in him at all even in the later rounds. I did not see any sign of cramping nor did I hear him complain about cramping to his corner in the whole duration of the fight. By the way cramping is a classic early manifestation of dehydration and fatigue and decrease level of consciousness is a much later sign. I even saw a vibrant and full of energy Oscar who got up from the stool with ease and walked across the ring in good pace to congratulate the “little guy”. If he was that dehydrated as what they he was, he would have cramped up just climbing up to the ring. And during the interview after the fight, Oscar had no sign of shortness of breath and had articulated his thoughts very well. If anyone cares to see what dehydration really is, just youtube Ali in Thrilla In Manila against Frazier and you will see for your self what I mean. Ali btw collapsed in the ring after that fight.
What I saw was this…He got hit too much and he cannot hit back because the “little guy” was not there to be hit. Oscar is used to fighting lumbering big guys who telegraph their punches and cannot duck punches even if you yell “AFLACK” at them.
July 27th, 2009 at 7:58 am
If that Little guy was a stand up fighter, he would have inflicted some serious damage on him.
Hats off to the little guys…Marquez and Pacquiao.
It’s a privilege to have witnessed them

I never hear you guys talk about manny getting KO’d and having to be helped off the canvas because his eyes were crossed!!!!
Manny beating Oscar doesnt mean anything to real boxing fans….its equivalent to Lennox beating Tyson, Terry Norris beating Sugar Ray Leonard, I can go even further back, But the point is your not comparing apples to apples. Manny is just fighting a former shell of what fighters used to be.
You can also argue that he has fought them after they have already lost (example: Oscar and Ricky)

I like Roger’s analogy on everything, in my opinion he gives credit where credit is due, Manny is better than everyone thought he was.
But, at the the same time, you have to ask…what is each fighter giving up in order to fight him?
Sometimes they say “your only as good as your last fight” and in my opinion a malnourished Oscar beat himself.

look Manny won against Oscar fair and square. Why do you haters keep saying that Oscar lost because of the weight. That’s just a freakin excuse for all you Oscar lovers. If you watch the fight again and again Oscar was just not ready to face a southpaw boxer with both power speed and agility. Manny fought in the ring that night a complete fighter and what troubles Oscar the most is he couldn’t read Manny’s movements. It’s so obvious in the fight that whenever Oscar try’s to unload a punch he keeps missing because Manny keeps circling and goin in and out. It was just a strategy made to destroy De la hoya.

i hate Oscar De La Hoya but the reason he lost was because of his weight Oscar never looked so weak i mean that wasn’t the Oscar that fought Mosley twice that wasn’t that the Oscar that fought Vargas that wasn’t that the Oscar that Mayorga anybody could have beat Oscar that night even Mayweather said Oscar was only training when the 24/7 cameras came around and he just did weight training thats why he only weighed 145 come fight time De La Hoya was a deadman walking and its De La Hoya’s fault for underestimating Pacquiao but Pacquiao did win but it wasnt a hard fight to win the real De La Hoya didnt show up

Here is my suggestion……
After beating Cotto this coming November, for those unbeleivers of Pacquiao why don’t schedule a rematch fight between Pacquiao and de la Hoya at 154 pound limit.
I’m sure that Pacman can still knock out the big man at that weight. Then for those that think that De la Hoya was dehydrated in their first fight will stop. It will be a big pay per view event. Come think of it??????????????

Before the fight happens there will be negotiations and both fighters agreed with the purse, the weight and other issue. This will certainly speaks that both fighters agree win or loss no excuses.
There are about 8-10 weeks of training i bet both fighters are aware of it. Why fight if ur unsure to win? ODH has a lot of wealth why fight pacman if he’ll get dehydrated. (remember 90% of d so called experts expects ODH to K.O. pacman)
ODH got the best team for his training. and Ricky got the same. He brags also that he will win but at the end of the fight Pacman prevails. If you fight certain fighter i bet ur confident to win.
Losing is part of the game. You have to accept it. Thats boxing win or lose. But no “EXCUSES”.

He beat Oscar at his natural weight, baldomir, judah, hatton, castillo in his prime, hernandez, chop chop, gatti, etc. How do you call Pacman boxings biggest and most exciting fighter when Mayweather doess better PPV numbers then him and makes more money, and is undefeated. This fight needs to happen cuz im tired of all this hating. When Floyd beats manny then its going to be well he needs to fight Shane, then he needs to fight Cotto, and then whoever else. Yall are going by what yall feel then what you know. You want Floyd to lose cuz he is black and talks alot of shit. If he was quiet like Pacman yall wouldnt be doing this much hating. To those whining about Pacquiao vs De La Hoya what is important is Pac won – that’s the most important thing to casual fans. To hell about he is drained, its De La Hoya’s fault for not knowing what he can handle. Only boxing nitpickers still point it out. Get over it. Its still tough for people to swallow that ODLH turned into a punching bag. Let me guess the people who say ODLH was drained were most likely the ones who bet Pacquiao will be KO’d. Maybe ODLH was drained but who cares? The main thing he got destroyed by a little guy named Pacquiao who fights Big guys unlike Floyd who fights Small ones.

How in the hell do you figure Mayweather fights smaller guys. Baldomir, Gatti, Oscar, Castillo, corales, all of them are bigger than him. You guys act like Floyd has been a junior welterweight or welter weight all of his life. I mean the dude has titles in 5 different weight classes sooooooooo he did start real light. I mean Pacman has gone up and fought bigger guys but Floyd has too. Dont say he hasnt fought bigger guys, say he just hasnt fought more bigger guys than Manny. Remember dude Floyd is only 5’8 and about 150 when he is not in training. Come on dude lets keep it real. You dont never see Floyd training with a sweat suit on. Cotto does, Margarito does, Oscar does. Lets tell the truth for once. Haters dont get far in life and you will see come next year Floyd will dismantle Pacman, Cotto, Mosley or whoever else he faces.

Ya lebron can dunk harder n maybe jump higher but kobe will make sure he wins the game by the end of the night. N thats exactly wat floyd does. WIN! Hey dude its not running its outthinking and outboxing your oppenent. Your another Mayweather hater who is going to be dissapointed when Pacman get his ass taxed by Floyd. Skills and intelligence when fights its a thinking mans game. why would mayweather try to rumble with a boxer. At the end of the day dont blame Mayweather for putting on landslide fights that his opponents get they ass whipped. stop hating give mayweather his props. If your going to blame someone blame his opponents for their performance. You sound like Larry Merchants hating ass. Always discrediting Floyd. You want to see a rumble watch UFC. Boxing is different. Their is no comparison dude. I love UFC. Brock, GSP, Silva, Rampage, Thiago, just to name a few. But what makes more money boxing or mma.

When Floyd kos Marquez yall going to say he is the best cuz Marquez in actual reality beat Pacman. You know it to boy.KEep it real nigga.Floyd is coming back to cross the T on his legacy. He is coming back because their is money to be made, he wants to solidify his legacy, and so he can get you haters off his back. You guys are always talking shit about Floyd running and retiring but when it come to Joe Calzage retiring and running from challenges like a rematch with Hopkins, Dawson, Croch, or Ward you dont say nothing. And Calzaghe is cocky ass hell just like Floyd. Difference is Floyd’s resume is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more impressive. In the words of Curtis Jackson aka 50 cent. I dont know what his record is but i know he aint loss. LOL

RM seems like his statements are hard to swallow for his side (pacman exceeding his expectations). C’mon I ‘m also skeptical before that pacman could beat DLH and being skeptical that he could beat hatton that easily, I also thought that will be a hard fight for him. Anyways, this separates greatness far from being good let us say that floyd gayweather is a pretty good technical boxer, but his attitude really sucks(that is why he had many haters here including me). I have seen him fight on TV and the net let us say that he is impressive with that 39-0 (29 KO) but still he’s got to fight more fights to compare with pacquiao’s 51-46w-3l-2d (35 KO) with that quality of opponents it is impossible to have no loss at all… so gayweather have no bragging rights for his puny 39 fights and that ZERO loss… prove us wrong Floyd!! fight those quality opponents and get that 51-0 to prove you’re better… but I guess you’ll just duck out!! and play for the money… The thing is you won’t get no money with that attitude of yours!!! and the boring fight you bring…. nough said…

Pacquiao may fight and beat the Kiltchskos and there will still be excuses. For a Pac hater, there is no real win for Pacquiao.
Here’s the secret to Pacquiao’s win at higher weight: He has the speed of a flyweight and the power of a middleweight. A welterweight fighter is not used to fighting a man as quick as Pacquiao. Bigger fighters are doomed to lose vs. Pac. Including Cotto.
In Delahoya’s fight, it is insane to keep punching someone you can’t hit. So DLH must quit.
In Hatton, Pac was just too fast for him. Hatton could not see the punches. No one can argue with the results.
