Unheralded Marcos Rene Maidana of Buenos Aires, Argentina stunned HBO’s rising star ‘Vicious’ Victor Ortiz earlier this evening at the famed Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The fight started with a bang, and it never let up. Left to headline a major HBO card on their own, Victor Ortiz and Marcos Maidana met in the center of the ring at the open bell and began to trade bombs. Both fighters were slinging knockout blows like gamblers rolling the dice in Vegas, and spark immediately began to fly. Mid way through the opening stanza Ortiz landed a huge right hand to Maidana’s chin that sent him to the canvass. Maidana stood up and immediately landed a monstrous right hand on Ortiz’s chin that was a knockout caliber punch. Ortiz got up on unsteady legs but showed huge heart to survive the round swinging.

In the second round Ortiz battered Maidana to the canvass twice and looked to be in command of the fight. As Ortiz walked back to his corner at the end of the round Golden Boy Promotion’s Oscar De La Hoya was screaming at his charge Ortiz to remain calm and calculated. The fighters continued to exchange bombs, swinging for the fences through several more rounds until Maidana caught Ortiz at the end of Round 5. Ortiz was badly cut in the exchange and looked in all kinds of trouble in his corner between rounds.

Maidana sized the opportunity at the beginning of Round 6 and didn’t let up. He pummeled a bewildered looking Ortiz to the mat early, and when he got up a discouraged Ortiz shook his head as the ringside physician deemed his cut too deep to continue. The bout was waived off at :46 of Round 6 and Marcos Maidana was awarded a stunning and well deserved TKO victory. With the win Maidana became the interim WBA light welterweight champion and improved to 26-1, (25 KOs) while Victor Ortiz dropped to 24-2-1, (19 KOs).

  1. RIP MJ Says:

i always said that Victor Ortiz wasn’t as good as they tried to make him seem thats the problem with boxing they hype up these fighters to be the next big thing then the fighter gets his ass whooped
thats why Floyd is the best to me because they hype all these others fighters up and then they lose but Mayweather hypes himself up and then he wins

  2. $Fan of Money$ Says:

Great fight, but a little defense would have been good. I take nothing away from the other fighter in fact I kinda like his style he can’t miss with that right hand. Learn from this fight and move on with boxing skills not brawling skills, I would watch more fights to come by Vicious Victor Ortiz.

    Fight of the year???

  4. joe bruiser Says:

    could be big joe.

there’s already a few great candidates this year:

    marquez-diaz
    pascal-diaconu
    ortiz-maidana

  5. Dreamliner Says:

    Marquez-Diaz was better.

I thought Ortiz quit at the end, but he could have been disappointed to see the ref walking over to him, because he knew the end was coming.

I think it was a good decision to stop the fight, but Cotto’s cut was worse!!!
