Mosley destroys Margarito in nine-round beatdown!
By FightFan.com Staff (24-Jan-2009)

'Sugar' Shane Mosley TKO 9 Antonio Margarito

Moments ago ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley upset the odds and systematically beat down the ultra-durable Antonio Margarito to win the WBA welterweight title. Mosley was sharper and more effective than the champion from the opening bell, and was landing increasingly cleaner power shots by the fourth round.

Mosley out-landed Margarito in every round and was able to keep the pace of the fight at a comfortable level by tying Margarito up whenever the champ would try to barge inside on him. By Round 6, Margarito was already showing signs of wilting and was beginning to take our first steps backwards.

Mosley rocked Margarito with a right uppercut followed by a left hand in Round 8, and followed up with several power punches until Margarito was clubbed to the canvas just before the end of the round. Margarito rose on unsteady legs to beat the count but his corner seemed set on stopping the fight. Having finally decided to let him continue into the ninth round, Mosley ripped Margarito with left and right hooks until the referee stepped in to stop it early in Round 9.

With the win, Mosley (46-5, 39 KO) wins the WBA welterweight title, becomes a two-time welterweight champion and cements his legacy as one of the best of his generation.

  1. terminatorh Says:

my hat off to anwar for calling the fight exactly as he said it would be.
I also gave Mosley a shot from the get go especialy to Ivan Montiel who constantly said Mosley had no chance.
I favored Margarito but I always said Mosley had a shot based on his experience, intelligence and allaround ring generalship.I KIND OF SAW THE FIGHT GO AS PACQUIAO V.S.DE LA HOYA just one sided I did’nt see Margarito land one clean hard punch I guess Margarito was overhyped after all.

  2. Bigkat Says:

I’d been saying, in previous commentaries, that Mosley could win this fight. But, I never saw the victory coming in that fashion. Holy shit did Shane look good. We can only hope it was all his, without “assistance”.

  3. terminatorh Says:

hey bigkat I remember about two months ago me and you were the only ones saying Mosley had a shot.
but i also was surprised at the way the fight finished I guess Margarito’s granite chin is’nt that great after all.

  4. Bryson Bell Says:

Margarito shouldnt have even beat Cotto, looking at the fightfan report, Margarito gets assitance in his handwraps making him punches harder than they would be with normal wrapping, I believe the Cotto fight should be ruled a a No Contest an they rematch. It was awesome watching Mosley this evening, MMA WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO BATTLE WITH BOXING. NO SPORT. Best Fight of the Year I believe; so far. I cant wait to see the Darchinyan Arce Fight! Great job Mosley you brought back memories! AND THE NEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Dreamliner Says:

I actually thought Mosley beat Cotto by split decision…I knew he would be able to withstand Margaritos power, but didnt think he was still game after a lackluster performance. mayorga coming in weighing 170 fooled us all. or at least some.

  6. nastyman Says:

i picked mosely by UD but no one knew mosely could ko margartio,,,,i guess anything can happen in boxing…….now cotto has to learn from this fight and rematch margarito….also later this year shane vs pac man,,i know pac man is gonna destroy hatto,,,,

  7. Neophyte Says:

The tornado was nowhere to be seen….what could have gone wrong? Sugar fought a sweet intelligent fyt, what a way to dispose of margarito. Sure there’s no sweetener this time! my pick got beaten by the better guy…..

  8. Ace Freeman Says:

I thought Tony would win a hard fought decision, so color me shocked. Not that I didn’t think Shane wasn’t capable, he just pulled out all the stops and turned back the clock.

Margarito was a helluva champion, and this really cements Mosley’s place in history.

Ivan where you at? You must be pretty shocked too.

    Wow. Props to Shane.

  9. Marciano la Viva Says:

Fantastic for Shane. How about Mayweather Vs. Shane at 145?

  10. nastyman Says:

lol Floyd vs shane……..shane will kill floyd

  11. Pound4Pound Says:

WOW!!! i had Shane by UD to and he just punished Margarito from round one to round nine Shane Mosley is a true champion he will fight anyone and will probably beat them i love Pretty Boy Floyd but Sugar Shane is a boxer/brawler and he has speed and power and i dont think Money Mayweather has faced anyone like him cause nobody is like Shane Mosley but congrats to him and i cant wait to see his next fight

  12. terminatorh Says:

now all of a suden everybody gets on the Mosley vanwagon?
he cant beat Mayweather, neither can Margarito,Mosley has a shot but Floyd is a very slick defensive fighter.
I think Mosley had a great training camp and was very motivated for this fight,Margarito on the other hand let down all the mexican fans that packed the arena,it was the largest crowd in the staples center for any event.
The mexican fans dont forget, and Margarito just lost a great deal of fan base with this humiliating defeat he did’nt even show up.
hopefully Victor Ortiz will emerge on the seen for us Mexican fans hes 140 but in a year or two could go up to 147.

  13. Treva Says:

It all points to the fact that styles make fights. I picked Margarito to beat Cotto, and Mosley to beat Margarito, but I didn’t pick Cotto to beat Mosely. Mosley had the wrong gameplan that night. I know De La Hoya’s last fight wasn’t good, but I’d love to see Mosley-DLH 3. The only definitive welterweight king this generation was Mayweather, or now maybe Pacquio.

  14. Bigkat Says:

This is indeed the quintessential. The welter wieght crown changes hands yet again. Terminatorh hits on another point: the Margarito band wagon is empty and the Mosley one getting full. I don’t remember so many pro-Mosley affirmers before the fight. Most of the commentary was about Tony knocking out Shane. Only a few of us gave Shane a chance. I knew he could win this fight because he’s so talented. Margarito is tough, but purely a one-dimensional fighter.
Bryson Bell makes another good point: Margarito’s hand wraps. Is there, indeed, any chance that the Margarito/Cotto fight could be ruled a No-Contest? Probably not, but I think future Margarito opponents will be more wary of his hand wraps. I also think Shane may have exposed Margarito’s weakness; future Margarito opponents may well choose to take a Shane Mosley type strategy.
Now, it’s Cotto next month and the welter weight division continues to shake up the world. Ivan where you at? What are your thoughts about Margarito’s loss?

  15. Anwar Jamison Says:

It’s funny people keep asking where Ivan is.

I don’t know where he is but here I am, but I’ll save all the “I told you so’s” lol

Great fight for Shane. I don’t think people should now switch to the “Shane is invincible”-type thinking or “Margarito was overrated”-type thinking because styles truly make fights.

I felt that Sugar Shane would beat Margarito because of what he brings to the table. You can watch all the tape you want, but if you can’t fight that way, you still can’t beat Margarito.

There will be some very interesting fights in 2009. If Pacquiao and Hatton can’t get it together, how about Mosley-Pacquiao?

  16. terminatorh Says:

pacquiao should stick to 140 and 135 he’s got plenty opponent’s there.
I think Margarito should fight Andre Berto next and if he cant beat him he’s going to go down hill from there or maybe collazo.
Mosley should go for cotto or chavez jr. or maybe even paul williams.just thinking out loud lol

  17. Marciano la Viva Says:

for the moment, i think margarito is done.
it would take 2 years of good fight and massive write-ups for him to recover his name to stardome. and i think this is a job for ivan m. …oops by the way, where is he?

  18. Bryson Bell Says:

I believe in Shane, I want to believe he could beat Paul Williams, its just somewhat difficult to think that way at this preent momment. Williams has better boxing ability than Margarito an can take a punch better obviously. I could see Williams having a bad night against Shane an till winning based off his punch out-put, youth, an natural athletism. I dont know who or whats next for Shane, maybe a fight with JMM. Thats probably the best matchup if he does not fight Paul Williams this year. PacMan would destroy Shane Mosley. HES NO MARGARITO OR MAYORGA HES P4P!!!

  19. Ace Freeman Says:

Anwar that was a good call on your part.

I thought of your prediction right when it was over.

As a result I didn’t think you’d be shocked. Ivan must have been pretty surprised. I know I was. =)

  20. Neophyte Says:

Kudos to Anwar, he nailed his pre-fyt analysis on the dot. Mosley-Cotto rematch should happen after Miguel wins his upcoming fyt. Forget Floyd, no excitement there. A fyt with JMM?…u must be joking man…”Manny would destroy Shane”?? Im a fan of the Pacman but im a realist…and level headed. Let’s see how Manny performs with Ricky and take it another step.

  21. Neophyte Says:

Kudos to Anwar, you nailed the pre-fyt analysis on the dot. Mosley-Cotto rematch is a must after Miguel wins his next fyt. Forget Floyd, he myt be good but no excitement in his fyts. Shane to fyt JMM?…u must be joking man! Unless u will promote it! “Manny would destroy Shane”??….i’m a fan of Pacman but I am a realist…and level headed. Let’s see how Manny performs with Ricky and take it to another step. Cheers….

  22. robin Says:

margarito looked like a punching bag. mosley dominated him all throughout.

  23. Marciano la Viva Says:

yes.shane can win via unanimous against pacman if opportunity speaks. Shane is a good actor, he is good pretending that he is a weakling in the early going, and once his opponent baited up, he is ready for a kill.
Margarito is a power puncher, he lacked wisdom, that’s why he lost to shane.

  24. Anonymous Says:

Shane punished Mulletcheater! that’s what that cheating rat gets for trying to pull that stunt.
I hope an-phony-o gets banned from boxing for loading his wraps.

  25. Anonymous Says:

Yeah well I hope Mosley gets investigated once again for using steriods in which I am pretty dam sure he used going into this fight.
Mosley should had been banned from boxing since using steriods against DLH so how about that you loser.

  26. Floyd Mayweather Jr Says:

Here I am yes I am back!

I know it’s been a few weeks since Margarito got beaten by Mosley I just wanted to answer all of you loyal FIGHT FANS out there!

First of all Feliz Ano 2009 to all you FIGHT FANS and second of all yes I am still shocked at Margarito’s devasting loss to Mosley.

I am also confused because many boxing fans had been telling me prior to this fight that Mosley was on steriods. Now I got many boxing fans telling me Margarito illegally wrapped his hands?

I don’t know what to think about this fight? I just hope both Margarito and Mosley did not try to cheat.

Respect to Anwar, Terminatorh and Bigkat for being the few FIGHT FANS who gave Mosley a chance.

  27. Ivan "LatinoPorVida" Montiel Says:

BTW that was I LatinoPorVida posting those last comments!

  28. reality Says:

i told you motherfuckers that he was gonna win antonio culerito as to slow he cant handle moslies speed or power margarito is an easy target he has no good defence he walks strait into punches just like the cotto fight he was getting smashed out there but the only way cotto lost the damn fight is because culerito had some type of hard shit in his gloves that were heavy yup he cheated he fuckin cheated thats not a true warrior right there thats a culero thats good they suspended his ass he does not deserve to box
