James Toney W SD12 Fres Oquendo

James ‘Lights Out’ Toney won a closely contested split decision over Fres Oquendo moments ago in Cabazon, CA. Early on Toney looked to lure Oquendo in to throw his patented counter shots, but seemed largely unable to land them with any frequency. Toney stunned Oquendo with a few right hands in the first half of the fight, but Oquendo continued to be slightly busier behind an intermittent jab. In the middle rounds Oquendo was deducted a point for hitting behind the head. Down the stretch the fighters traded close rounds before Oquendo stepped it up in the last two rounds. When the fight concluded the official judges scored the bout a split decision. Oquendo received one card 116-111, while the other two cards were judged 115-112 and 114-113 for James Toney. FightFan.com had the bout 114-113 for Toney.
