The following are comments Freddie Roach shared with FightFan.com prior to and in the build up to Manny Pacquiao's Dec. 6 victory over Oscar De La Hoya.

Ace Freeman: (May 16, 2008) Freddie in the past you’ve made a few comments that one day Manny Pacquiao could conceivably move up as high as welterweight to face Oscar De La Hoya. Is that crazy talk or could there be something to that?
Freddie Roach: No it’s real. I was talking about a potential Oscar fight and I think it depends on the style and how Manny goes about fighting him. For Manny to beat Oscar he’d need to box and use his speed. Manny would really have to be on top of his game because Oscar is bigger and stronger, but another thing to consider is that Oscar is older now and he’s having trouble pulling the trigger.
November, 2008
“I trained Oscar for a fight and I think that to make it down to 147 he’s going to struggle. My guy weighed 147 pounds going in to the David Diaz fight the day of the bout and he was having trouble making 135. So I think his best weight is probably around 140 right now . When the opportunity came up to fight Oscar at 147 I thought about it and I believe my guy can win the fight and that’s why we’re here.”
“Size doesn’t win fights. Speed, power, boxing ability, a game plan, activity… my guy has fought four times in the last year or so and Oscar hasn’t fought four times in four years.”
“Manny hits much harder. There’s no doubt about it. We have the advantage when it comes to the punch and there’s no doubt about that in my mind. We’ve also got the edge in activity and speed and Oscar, well he can’t pull the trigger anymore.”
“We’re going to step it up from round one and make this guy fight. Oscar tires in slow paced fights, and we are going to push him and push him and push him.”
“Can Nacho Bernstein make Oscar turn in to Juan Manuel Marquez? I don’t think so. I think Oscar is what he is at this stage of his career.”
December, 2008
“Pacquiao will stop Oscar within nine rounds”
“Next week, the shoe is gong to be on the other foot and Oscar is going to find out first-hand how Julio Cesar Chavez felt the night he lost to Oscar the first time (June 7, 1996).”

I recall Roach saying, “This is the year Manny get the belts.” referring to their plan for 2008.
130+135 then a masterful display of the sweet science a few days ago which propelwd him to a yet another level.

Yes, Freddie Roach could have uttered those prophetic words. On the other hand, I think Freddie, in those times that he said those words, could be planning for the years to come; and, he was already dreaming on how it could be done. Well, in achieving success or victory, dreaming on how to get to the future should be a natural matter. In fact, it serves as an inspiration, to start with.
Freddie not just a trainer or coach. You’re a dreamer, a planner, a strategist, a tactician,

Freddie, who is always confident, seemed almost assured that Manny would have little problem with Oscar. While I think Oscar is a very, very good fighter and has done great things in,and for,the sport of boxing,I dont have him as an all-time great. To me,when he stepped in with the top guys,he always seemed to come up a little short. Yea,he had the two wins against Chavez and Whitaker but both were well past prime. When you look at Hopkins,Trinidad,Mosley,Manny,Floyd..it seemed as Oscar was just a tad below “great” as far as all-time goes. I know he is a sure-fire hall of famer and most will disagree because I think the media and the fans throw the word “great” around way too much these days. Still,Oscar would always step in the ring with anyone and give it his best shot. I have tons of respect for Oscar and think he was a damn good fighter with a big heart,I just think he was just a tad short when comparing him with the all-time greats in the divisions which he fought. Manny is an amazing fighter who hasnt let the money, fame and success make him soft,he still fights like he is still a guy who doesnt know where his next meal is coming from. I hope he keeps that hunger, very few can sustain that hunger late into the career(which makes Hopkins so special). Manny has monster paydays ahead with Hatton and then, when he beats Hatton..that might just get Mayweather back in the gym. Well, see ya later guys.

The Pacman vs The Hitman? what a coincidence.. If this fight will happen.. it will be an very interesting fight. They both have the similar tendency of charging opponents and has the mass appeal of making people to see them fight.. But in my perspective, The Pacman will still prevail because of his style, his power, his natural and God given skills and most of all his work ethics hard-work,his heart and unfailing faith in the Lord.. Man he is that good and maybe the greatest fighter of all time.. Without a doubt.. Most exciting and The best pound4pound fighter? you couldn’t ask for more than that.. Come out Fucking Mayweather, fight and show us your decency of a boxing athlete or maybe your just one of many guys out there that has more than words but no actions.. Dance the chicken dance for us will you.. hehehe.. The Pacman will eat you alive.. Godbless the Pacman.. Godbless to all of us.. Mabuhay ang Pilipinas

margarito and the pacman would be the best fight.floyd almost didn”t beat oscar and his style and chin isn”t that good.he has never really gotten hit hard like the pacman will hit him.And his speed is not much faster than the pacman. You need someone who will bring the fight to the pacman and who can take as good as he gives.Pacman will have to work hard to make it his fight like what happened to cotto.margarito will make or break the pacman.

Freddie Roach named FightFan.com ‘Trainer of the Year’ 2008! » FightFan.com: Boxing News, Interviews, Articles, Videos, Results Says:
[...] Freddie Roach is pictured here during Manny Pacquiao’s one sided annihilation of Oscar De La Hoya on Dec. 6, 2008. It is perhaps iconic that across the ring sat the legendary Angelo Dundee as Roach uttered the above words to his star pupil in the heat of the action. A historic year in Manny Pacquiao’s corner in 2008 has earned Roach FightFan.com’s ‘Trainer of the Year’ award. Among other fights Roach developed a strategy to guide Pacquiao to victory over both Juan Manuel Marquez, and more emphatically Oscar De La Hoya to close out the year. Details of Roach’s work with Pacquiao can be seen here, in previous interviews through out the year. [...]
