Manny Pacquiao’s Golden Opportunity
By Ace Freeman (02-Sep-2008)

FightFan.com's Ace Freeman weighs in on the recently signed mega-fight between Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao and examines what it means for boxing's current pound-for-pound king.

It is actually happening. When I first heard that this fight may become a reality for December 6 of this year I was taken aback. The first stage I went through was denial. I simply didn’t believe that “Oscar De La Hoya vs. Manny Pacquiao” could or would happen. As it became more apparent that the fight was actually being negotiated I experienced some anger. I was excited for the landscape of the lightweight division with Manny Pacquiao in it, and I wanted to see De La Hoya pick on someone his own size in Antonio Margarito. Where do these stars of boxing get off not doing what public opinion and common sense seem to dictate they should?

Finally, in late August… acceptance. Manny Pacquiao is going to move up from 135 pounds (where he had had just one fight) to 147 pounds to face Oscar De La Hoya who will move down from 154 pounds.

Suddenly I found myself staring at a blank computer screen and an over inquisitive cursor demanding that I tell them what I think of this match up.

My immediate feelings are the initial ones I had which seemed solid logic as to why this fight need not happen. The facts remained… Manny Pacquiao is currently the best fighter on the planet. De La Hoya, while obviously and significantly bigger in stature, is widely regarded as being well past his prime.

And then… dollar signs. It doesn’t take an expert to remind you that money makes the world go round. The fact that this is one of the biggest money fights that can happen in boxing has resonated since the initial hints of the match up began to surface.

Still, it doesn’t seem that simple to me. Despite the fact that Oscar publicly spoke about this being Manny Pacquiao’s biggest payday (and by a wide margin) in the negotiation process, it didn’t seem to be mentioned nearly enough that Pacquiao is a money making machine in his own right. If that is lost on you try and spy the little Nike logo on everything he wears.

No, this is about more than money. For Manny Pacquiao… this is about conquest. The expectation that comes with being the top pound-for-pound fighter in boxing comes with an equal part criticism and there are those that see this as an exhibition bout. No titles are on the line. Oscar De La Hoya is not a top pound-for-pound fighter. Is he a big challenge? Or is he just big?

In many ways he is a monolith. Certainly in earnings he is an Everest who leaves any fighter who steps in the squared circle longing for an opportunity to cash in. Oscar De La Hoya has transcended the sport in the regard that while the boxing fraternities may not find their thirst for significant title fights quenched, they are silenced by the sheer magnitude of the million fans who pony up $50 each to watch him fight.

It is that spotlight that Manny Pacquiao wishes to step into. For Pacquiao, it isn’t about his immediate and personal legacy any more than it’s about the money or what boxing writers might think. Larry Merchant once put it very eloquently saying something to the effect of there being an entire Nation that lives and dies with every move the Filipino fighter makes, and as Manny takes that tremendous weight on his shoulders… it gives him wings.

Enter the Filipino people to the equation. Manny Pacquiao’s tremendous rise to greatness in recent years has seen the 29 year old fighter elevated to the status of an Elvis Presley to his people. He is everything that a European soccer team is to their country, all wrapped up in to one single individual.

The story of Manny Pacquiao isn’t limited to boxing fans. He is an active symbol for his nation and he instills pride in all his fellow countrymen. When Manny Pacquiao fights… life in the Philippines stops. People gather in local bars and theaters. Families (from infants to grand parents) gather in their homes glued to their televisions and the crime rate all but stops.

It is with this focus and level of attention that the significance of this ‘Event’ comes in to play. Oscar De La Hoya is a monumental figure, and Manny Pacquiao moving up in weight to face a fighter larger than life is nothing more than the next chapter in his story. Can the smaller hero overcome the tremendous disadvantages to become the victor in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds? Is there a Rocky Balboa twist waiting around the corner if Pacquio were to lose but with a gallant effort? For Pacquiao the act of laying it on the line and possibly defeating the titanic figure that is Oscar De La Hoya makes for an epic storyline.

This is a fight where title belts and the lofty expectations of dedicated boxing fans can be put on hold to allow other plot lines to come to the forefront. Internationally a broader light will be cast on boxing and the sporting world will take notice. It may not be the fight boxing pundits were calling for… but it is the stuff of which legends are made.

  1. Mexifan Says:

Oscar will get the top bill but people are going to root for the small guy. Most everyone loves a good underdog story.

Can the small guy pull it off? That’s the intrigue of the fight.

  2. Dreamliner Says:

Great story coming from a “boxing pundit”.

First of all, like most…I am very disturbed by DLH picking a super smaller guy and convincing the public that this is a mega fight based on their popularity rather than the styles and calibers of both fighters.

I don’t need to get into details!!!!

Yes, this will be a good fight for the interest of boxing, but nothing more than that. (the average fan will be happy)

Maybe they can make one great undercard fight to go with this.

Would be nice to know what the final split was???? (PLZ)

Maybe it would’ve been better to give PBF an even split!!!!

  3. Pacquiao hater Says:

Pacman could only win by decision but the golden boy I feel won’t let Pacquiao go the distance as he stops the smaller man in the late rounds.

Pacquiao does not deserve such a big money fight cause really who did he just beat oh ya I forgot David Diaz and who’s David Diaz really?

I would have rather seen Pacman vs Soto so that Humberto could kick his azz!

  4. golo Says:

pacquiao,is going down quick and real bad,no more than 5 rounds……………..

  5. Gil P. Acosta Says:

Hey, this match is a MISMATCH: NOW WAY AN AGING DELAHOYA CAN BEAT A PRIME PACQUIAO.

  6. eric ryan Says:

TO PACQUIO HATER AND GOLO – JUST TO LET YOU KNOW GUYS, PACQUIO BEATS MARQUEZ,MORALES,BARRERA,DIAZ AND EVERYONE ELSE FAIR AND SQUARE.AND TO BE BEATEN BY OSCAR BY NO MORE THAN 5 ROUNDS I DOUBT IT! HE MIGHT BE BEATEN BUT HE WILL FIGHT AND STAND BLOODY OR NOT TIL THE END! ………..OR THE OTHER WAY AROUND…………….

  7. lito Says:

The Golden Boy thinks it is safer to fight Pacman for an exit in his career rather than the Big guys!! Fans will watch this fight only on curiosity, right!!

  8. Anonymous Says:

size dose make a diffrence an youl see in this DLH
could stay up there wit the best fighter floyd mayweather this is a easy win for de la hoya

  9. pas abrazaldo Says:

This is gonna be an interesting fight. size does matter in boxing, but more so is the speed and power. I think Manny Pacquiao will win this fight by a late KO.

  10. Lindsay Says:

I’m a Pacquiao fan because he always gave me my money’s worth and always comes to fight but I think that odlh has the edge in size(height and reach), power, skill, and has taken shots from really powerful punchers like trinidad, vargas, mosely, and mayweather(Although his power is unrated), the only advantage that Pacquiao has is heart but heart can only bring you so far, I salute Pacquaio again for fighting a bigger and great fighter and although this might be a mismatch I’m still going to buy it because it is an interesting matchup, and also when Pacquiao went up in weight from 122 to 126 lbs to fight for the first time in the featherweight division against barrera everybody in the Philippines also thought that it was a mismatch because he was fighting for the first time and he was fighting a great fighter in barrera which was at his prime at that time, everybody said that his power will not be as effective in the 126 lb division compared to when he was in the 122 lb division and he should fight two fights at least in 126 before fighting barrera but he turned it around and knocked out barrera, I’m not saying that the same would happen but you never know, that is why we watch boxing or any other sport for that matter because you never know.

  11. Roy Says:

This is definitely a Golden opportunity for Pacquiao.
He is due to win an Oscar for his performance, and there won’t be any Acting involved.

  12. mcemman Says:

I think this is a very interesting fight with a global implication! This will make boxing on the fore front cover in all papers in the world and be the talk in all walks of life! This is really a big event! I think that height doesn’t win fights but talent, speed and determination! PacMan can win this fight by knockout!!!!!!!!!!

  13. djangolo Says:

lol haters blah blah all u want but it dont matter u sukers r just hater i wonder y?maybe its bcoz ur just in front of ur computer not makin millions like pacquiao,,haters r mofos r jealous,,hahaha

  14. onemore Says:

the senators in the philippines are presently discouraging pacquiao to enter politics. i think they are just afraid of pacquiao. pacquiao is a national treasure and yet they are belittling the national treasure. can lito lapid and ramon revilla who became senators for all their deficiencies match pacquio?

  15. onemore Says:

these senators, it’s obvious, are just sour-graping because pacquiao didn’t join their political party. sorry to you guys…

  16. flodgere Says:

It takes a lot of courage and a special kind of fighter to take on this kind of challenge. Oscar, no matter how past-his-prime or how old he is right now, still has enough power to really hurt such a small opponent in Pacquiao. On the other hand, this Pacman has been climbing up in weight classes with much “ease” than much of the other great fighters that I know. And everytime he moves up in weight, he not only defeats the bigger/heavier guys, but beats them in a dominant fashion. When he lost his Flyweight title because of weight drain, he instantly jumped up three weight classes and blow away with “ease” the IBF Junior Featherweight champion (Ledwaba). Next, we all know what happened to the great Marco Antonio Barrera when they fought at Featherweight. The only exception is when he fought the great Erik Morales for the first time at Super Featherweight where he lost a close decision but instantly avenged it with two spectacular knockouts on rematches. And lastly, we saw what happened to David Diaz last June at Lightweight. So this special fighter they call “Pacman” hasn’t really tasted a real challenge when moving up in weight. And now that he decided to “play with the Big Boys”, we still have to wait and see what happens…

  17. the analyst816 Says:

Lets just wait & see for the fighters Gloves do the talkings…we should be proud boxing fans in witnessing this event of a lifetime..its gonna be a fight of the decade..ONLY A FANTASY now its a REALITY!!…whoever wins this fight..he deserves it
…If Manny cant knockout Oscar..he will lose by decision…

  18. ed vega Says:

well see this two guy prepared theirselves if odl shrink his wieght by physical ,good but by diet its bad.manny will be put extra and burn that protien so if both make it to the lmit only one will win.

  19. White Tiger Says:

Nice post their “flodgere” This fight is “As Is Where Is”. Are you insane?this is my first tought
when I first heard it in the news that Oskee_Packy is doable, but fruits have their ripe days, flowers have their blossoms and Larry Merchant’s fertile minds delivers.Let’s take it once in a life time and let us enjoy savoring this event.

  20. Dr. Arcidi s. Jumaani Says:

well, having said all by self-declared boxing analysts, the probability of a manny victory over dela hoya should not be ruled out even by a hairline of a margin as long as manny wont be knocked out by oscar..lets see..

  21. Fearless Bong Says:

Pacman will going to lose in this fight, known why……

ODLH “the Golden Crocodile” will be going to be melt just like a candle and get TKO inside round 11,

Pacman Speed, Power, and determinaton to crack another history in his boxing career will make him victorious on dec. 6.

This is not a money fight but rather another sensational bouts of the century. blockbuster events because Pacman will going for new boxing history in boxing world….

Edwin Valero… Humberto Soto, Joanie Guzrun, JMM crying Baby, Nate Campbet The Stupid, Joel Casamayor the dirtiest boxer of all time, Juan Diaz the Baby Bull but come out as baby goat when he was beaten by Nate, and Ricky Hatton, etc.

Pacman will going to make this people kissed the canvas when they will meet and fight next year. but they will have to fall in line for a crack with Pacman Mega Sweepstakes……

  22. Fearless Bong Says:

I mean Pacman will NOT going to lose this fight…

  23. job'z Says:

    Round 1-9:
ODLH as a winner by TKO.
Oscar is strong during these rounds.

    Round 10-11:
I’ll pick Pacman as a winner by TKO.
If it goes beyond round 9, ODLH is already tired. Or perhaps, become frustrated or bored for failure to connect his shots because of Pacman’s agility, running and punching ability. And for this, ODLH will be an easy target for Pacman.

    Round 12:
I’ll pick Pacman as a winner by unanimous decision.

  24. ding Says:

For an ordinary boxing fan where good action in the ring makes me awake, its definitely exciting to know that Manny will fight ODLH. This is surely a fireworks in the making. We all know Manny when fighting, he gives his 101% and with caliber of ODLH i think he will give us more. About the size differential i think this is nothing but talk because they both agreed to weight to the same 147 lbs. And talking about the height and reach this will be compensated by speed, technique and power. Surely this event is one for the ages and i think we can not see in the near future an event as intriguing as this. Happy Watching come Dec 6.

  25. Fearless Bong Says:

    Yeah your’re right job’z

He is strong as you say it, but IF…. he can hit the Pacman….. I bet not, he will look like Cazares this time who keep on whooping but cannot hit the Fast and the quickest boxer of this geneeration.

but ODLH “the Golden Crocodile” will be exausted in round 8-11, and Pacman will going to melt this Golden Crocdile like a candle and get beaten by the great PACMAN.

  26. arnold Says:

im already a pacquiao fan during his early pro years. im amazed as I noticed his relentlessness, fearlessness, and hard punching power inside the ring. before he fought barrera i already predicted that he can easily beat him because I based my assumption in their respective boxing skills. I think this extraordinary skills in boxing of Pacquiao is the bottomline of all. Pacquiao is better than Dela hoya so im brave enough to bet my money in him. Those critics who believe that Dela hoya will easily win bet your money if you are really sure and dont just do the talking. better that if Manny wins this fight all of you critics should quit your jobs coz you’ve done nothing good but to criticize a good person in manny.

  27. maGGot_SOUP Says:

This fight will go either way.

Pacquiao should take a look on ODLH left hook
if Pacman will be careless then this fight would last in 1-5 rounds.

if Pacquiao would last after 5 rounds then the Golden Boy would land on the canvass on the 8-10 Rounds.

    daghang salamat Higala sa pagbasa!

  28. zone d Says:

a piece of my mind ….ok biggest fight of manny’s career??? dlh’s farewell? now wont be the easiest for a large dlh to drop thee amount of weight much less fight at this weight while having just over 24 hours to replenish. on the other hand manny’s ability to move up in weight and keep his speed has allready been proven.will a whopping 10 pounds slow manny,? possibly, but not to the point that his speed will be equal to that of oscar. does more weight over the the next few months hurt manny, or does it translate to greater power?

  29. Jay Cabasal Says:

Surely this will be added to one of the greatest boxing event in history in the making. Although along time ago (BC) a battle was made between David and Goliath and then it was writen, and now Pacman and Golden Boy on a clash on Dec 06 2008 for the being part to witness the main event of the year. Be part of it and watch what will happen…

  30. Fearless Bong Says:

Jay Cabasal OK ka lang Ba Diyan

Probably this will be a great fight.
and include those Filipino fighters that came out victorious in Night of Champions.

Undercards will be some great filipino Champs..

Dito Si Dax Kasama ko. Kumusta….

  31. zone d Says:

oscar on thee other hand allready has this greater power ,but how much will he lose, cutting weight?or will cutting weight really make him faster? and make this fight one for thee ages ? to all the haters out there of both fighters,if you would stop to think ,that both of these fighters are proven. and neither needs this fight . manny doesnt need oscars big purse . and oscar doesnt need to go out at the hands of the proclaimed mexican asassin. my view 1-7 pacquiao 8-12 dlh manny needs a ko in these rounds or a murderous rant, de la hoya will continue to rack points .and and win surley if this goes to desicion….good luck to youre chosen boxer this will certainly be an awesome battle……???

  32. Anfernee Says:

To Pacquiao hater.. If any fighter deserves a mega fight, it’s Manny. He gives his blood sweat and tears for the sake of entertaining fans. And he gives them against top fighters as well. Remember, he fought Morales, Barrera, & Marquez twice and only got 1 loss! Humberto Soto? Who the f*%k is that?!

  33. Coconut Says:

Kudos!! to Larry Merchant, for this wild but golden ideas…. Congrats to Bob Arum, for working on this fight to a reality. Definitely i will buy this fight.. Oscar is my idol same with Mega Manny.. so ilove to see them squaring off the canvass.. to critics.. heheheh!!! sorry, all you can is to criticize but you’ll not earn…

  34. Jay Cabasal Says:

hahaha kumusta pare bong! d2 ok lang sana manalo pacman tapos pagisipan nya ulit ang pagpasok ng pulitika baka maubos pera nya… Regards Pre

  35. Fearless Bong Says:

PACMAN by KO in round 11
    $100 will win $1000

  37. Jay Cabasal Says:

ako rin boxing fanatics lalo na paglaban ni pacquiao. sa amin kc pag my laban c pacman lahat ng my hilig ng boxing nakikinood smin dahil bumibili ako ng pay-per-view nya. whoever pacman’s opponent will be surely one thing will happen… crowds will go wild…! and i cant wait for it

  38. Jay Cabasal Says:

ok bro also come visit our forumsite at http://www.astigilagan.proboards100.com sa mga mahilig ng airsoft war games mabuhay kayong lahat…

  39. dear pac haters Says:

Is it really hatred or envy? I think it’s both because you still watch PACMAN’s fights despite all. Come Dec 6, you may be praying for his down fall, but guess what? Win or lose, he is $20M+ richer in one night, right. Something your fighters could only dream of.

  40. Nath Says:

Pacman is going to make history. from flyweight to bamtam to feather to lightweight. now to DLHoya’s weight. after he’ll knock DLH, he’ll be fighting anyone in heavyweight. There was Bruce Lee in the 70s knockin out big guys, then Royce Gracie in the 90s. Its PacMan in 2000s.

  41. flodgere Says:

Thanks “White Tiger”, appreciate it… I think there’s excitement and fireworks written all over this matchup and whatever speculations we have regarding this fight can only be answered on the night of Dec. 6.

  42. Mc Dermott Says:

I totally agree with you Mr. Ace my man. This is definitely not anymore about money for Pacquiao because he is indeed a money-making machine because of his popularity (by the way have you heard that he was invited by the Chinese Olympic Committee to visit the Olympic site days before the actual Olympic Games? This is just to show how popular he is right now!!!). This fight for Pacquiao is not only for legacy but also for all-time greatness. Many writers has already given their unfounded verdict that ODLH will make a mincemeat out of Pacman due to his size, but they should’nt do so because they might be eating their papers and pens hahaha!

  43. nathanmania Says:

20 yrs from now people will be satisfied not to talk about “WHAT IF PACQUIAO-DE LA HOYA COLLIDE?”. Good thing is that this fight is made and we are just waiting of what will happen on Dec 6 figh night. For me its better to happen that discuss later of a fantasy/dream match up.

  44. giusseppe Says:

    onemore,

i completely disagree that senators are afraid of him running. i personally don’t like him to run for any government office. it will only tarnish his image amongst fans. remember what happened in cebu? he was booed because everybody didn’t like the idea him running for office. like i say, it will only tarnish his image. im a huge pacquiao fan and i understand he wants to help his country more but running for office isn’t the right move for him. i definitely won’t vote for him. he could do more as a sportsman and influence other by being that. he could help change our country not just by being in office. he could do it thru other means more effective than being in office. i don’t like the idea of him being in a government office coz we all agree that ‘philippine government’='corruption’.

so who would want our supposedly ‘national treasure’ be branded as corrupt? i certainly wouldn’t.. a huge fan i maybe but i’m not an idiot who’s too fanatical. there are other capable people for that.. leave politics to politicians and sports to sportsmen… that’s how i see it.

if he runs for office, im one of those millions who wouldn’t vote him for office for the reasons i have just stated.

  45. Limbarok Says:

Indeed, this fight will have an important space down the history book. It will be forever dreams and “WHAT IFS” if this fight doesnt came to Larry Merchant’s fabulous mind. First, Two great warriors of two different generation tangles each other for boxing glory. Second, Win or Lose nobody will tell everyone that Pacman is ducking somebody because he’s afraid or something to that effect coz he even go up to challenge DLH for that monumental task. This fight will be remembered as the “one in a million fight” coz the willingness of both fighters to put their names and career on the line for one night. This fight will be the subject matter even 50 years from now. This is HISTORY in the making.

  46. Anonymous Says:

  47. Arman Aquino Says:

I will just wait for the fight night…
For now, just reading all internet dealies regarding this upcoming mega-fight between two well known ring gladiators..I hope PACMAN wins..

  48. nap caballero Says:

I have nothing to say, becoz all thing that i want to be said is already written by all of you guys… but one thing i am sure, this a history in a boxing world and a Filipino boxing legend for a Filipino people, win or lose for a Pack man. One thing that catch my spirit down, when I didn’t see PACKMAN in the ringside during the fight of other FILIPINOS, He is not there.. to support Bautista, Nietes and AJ… WHY..? PACKMAN, maybe we will start to think not to watch your fight too. What do you think GUYS…

  49. Dreamliner Says:

Manny will not win by knockout

Please do your research before placing your bets!

  50. Dhota Says:

Pacman will win this fight with 5 to 8 combination to the body at the later rounds…ODLH will retire after this fight….Mabuhay Manny!!!

  51. Ottog Hahn Matalam Says:

We didn’t see the ff. how these nano underdogs upset against those titanic bullies:
    David vs. Goliath;
    Israel vs. The Arabs;
    Mongols vs. The Europeans;
    Vietcongs vs. Americans;
    Afghans vs. Russians;
    Chagaev vs. Valuev
Aren’t we glad that in our lifetime, we’ll see it happens in realtime by sparing our hard earned $50+? Then why don’t we unite to see how oppressors are humbled?

  52. rhoda go-anicete Says:

pacquiao will fight like what sugar ray leonard did against marvelous marvin hagler. oscar will be frustrated by the quickness and speed of pacman. pacman by unanimous decision.

  53. boxing fan Says:

    to PACQUIAO HATER:

you are crazy and ignorant!! are you blind?? look at the performance of MANNY PACMAN now?? by the way, who is SOTTO now?? I’ll bet you money a one thousand bucks if he can kick manny’s ass! I am a 100% sure that SOOTO will be smashed by manny pacman coz sotto is now turning to a garbage boxer!! YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT BOXING!! If I were you, you will just keep your mouth shutt!!!and keep quite!!

  54. Ivan "LatinoPorVida" Montiel Says:

Ace love this featured article, very well writen!

I myself would have loved to see De La Hoya fight Margarito but you know afterall I don’t mind watching Oscar against Pacquiao. At first I was thinking the same as you, not wanting to hear about this possible fight between Oscar versus Pacquaio. I wanted to see Oscar take on Margarito the most feared fighter today.

I still want to see Oscar take on Margariot but since it’s Pacquiao versus De La Hoya then I along the millions will be watching this mega fight come December 6th.

Although it’s a big difference in size, I have a strong feeling Pacman can very win this fight. I love the fact that Pacquiao is willing to fight anybody. Manny Pacquiao is a true warrior and as much as I respect the golden boy I feel he’s older and slower compared to the much younger and faster fighter in Pacquiao. Pacman is hunger, he has a goal and that’s to become a legend in boxing, to win not only for himself but for the Philipines!

Oscar de la hoya I believe made a bad choice in his decision to fight Manny Pacquiao. The golden boy is stuck in a lose lose situation because even if he were to beat Paquiao many FIGHT FANS will bad mouth him for beating on the much smaller opponent.

I just hope after this fight, Oscar’s final fight will be against Antonio Margarito!

De La Hoya needs to fight the bigger opponents not smaller such as Stevie Forbes and now Manny Pacquiao.

  55. dj_mack (free thinker) Says:

soto will cry if he faced the pacman….

  56. poohwetmooh in dubai Says:

PACMAN HAS NOTHING TO LOSE THIS FIGHT…EVEN ODLH WIN…PACMAN WILL STILL BE THE WINNER FOR FIGHTING THE BIG MAN…BUT LIKE MOST PEOPLE HOPES…PACMAN WILL WIN…

NEXT LIGHWEIGHT DIVISION FIGHTERS WILL RUSH TO THE LINE VS PACMAN…..

  57. bunol Says:

a real fighter has an heart of a lion any opponents
either big or small he faces them all. that’s the characteristics of manny the “pacman” pacquiao he just do the talking inside the ring.. what can you say about dat fools????

  58. bunol Says:

let’s just sit ang relax wait for dec. 6 and we will know the results then.. hehehehe
i’m a manny pacquiao fans and i know manny will win the game… that’s our hero…

  59. Wannabe Says:

I like de la hoya, but to all mexicans, u should feel betrayed because he’s not fighting for Mexico but puerto rico, coz of the wife.
