Read on for an update about light heavyweight champion Joe Cazlaghe and his search for a next opponent.
According to Joe Calzaghe he may have just one more fight in him before he looks to retire. The super middleweight champion, who recently won the light heavyweight crown in a close decision over Bernard Hopkins, is nearing the end of his fifteen plus year career, a stretch during which he has remained undefeated. With the news he may only have one fight remaining all eyes in the boxing world are eagerly fixated on who that final opponent may be. In recent weeks middleweight kingpin Kelly Pavlik’s name has been thrown about and not just by fans and pundits. Pavlik’s promoter Bob Arum stated after the middleweight champion’s recent destruction of Calzaghe’s countryman Gary Lockett that a fall clash between Calzaghe and Pavlik was their number one choice. However, in a recent article from the BBC Calzaghe has seemingly shot down the notion of a potential fight with Pavlik.
“It would be a great fight (vs. Pavlik),” Calzaghe told the BBC. “Pavlik is a very good fighter and looked impressive against Gary (Lockett) but I’m in a different league. Kelly is just establishing himself and is not as big a star as the legendary Roy Jones.”
A Calzaghe – Jones Jr. showdown is still a very marketable fight, but like Hopkins, Jones is several years removed from his best. Unfortunately unlike Hopkins Jones does not represent a significant title or ranking in boxing’s present landscape. Regardless there is little doubt that the name would look good on Calzaghe’s resume next to Hopkins, despite the fact both fights would have meant far more had they happened several years back when both men were at their best.
Calzaghe believes a swan song vs. Roy Jones would be the perfect way to end his career. “It will be the fight of my life.” Calzaghe said. “Me and Roy Jones wouldn’t just be a fight, but a spectacular event.”
When asked about where the fight might take place Calzaghe commented that he would very much like to end his career in his home country of Wales where he spent the majority of his career, but acknowledged that it might be in the United States for financial reasons. Providing the financial terms of the fight can be agreed to a Jones Jr. vs. Calzaghe clash remains a distinct possibility for the fall. Jones has made it abundantly clear in recent months that a Calzaghe fight is his top priority, adding that he would even travel to Wales to make the fight if necessary. If the financial terms can be reached the fight seems to be a natural in terms of both television network and fan interest.

Calzghe don’t want none of Kelly Pavlik. Thats okay though, even grandpa Jones will catch that slappa with a big shot he won’t see coming. I like old RJJ to upset Calzaghe’s apple cart.

Bryson Bell Says:
Calzaghe is a sly..hides in the shadows of Wales, an decides to fight old washed up fighters. A fight with Kelly would be a wrong descision, since he knows he will get hurt badly and theres no sticking an moving with Pavlik, plus he has a good point with the experience level,I just hope Kelly is’nt another Jermaine Taylor. The ROy ones fight is worth watching Roy could actually beat this guy. Roy still has that roar in him I believe Joecan unleash that hellish Flurrie known as Mr.Unstoppable. I would love to watch Oscar De LA Hoya and Joe Calzaghe fight. That would truly be an epic battle!

I think a lot different from Bryson Bell. With all due respect I think if Calzaghe wants to retired undefeated it will be a walk in the park to fight Roy Jones. If Roy Jones couldn’t destroyed a rusty supper slow tito trinidad and I’m not hating on Tito, he is want of my fav.boxers of all time-but if i couldn’t win Tito by ko there’s no way he can nearly damage Calzaghe. Now on the other hand Pavlick-decent speed-great combinations-davastating power punches- That will be a match that it could go either way and i still will give a very slight edge to Calzaghe due to his incredible speed and the amount of punches he can throw per round.

787 Dreamliner employee Says:
Please go back and watch the RJ vs Trinidad fight….he didn’t KO him because he toyed with him in the later rounds. He could’ve easily finished him, but instead fought a crowd pleaser, and at the same time kept peoples interest in boxing to see them even more. If he would’ve KO’d Trinidad: Calz wouldn’t want to fight him (in my opinion) and who would want Trinidad who’s last win was versus a fat Mayorga? I think RJ is still a worthy opponent.

Do u seriously believed that RJ didn’t ko trinidad cause it was a bad decision for bussines? Listen to what u are saying!!Pure nonsense!!!! Hed didn’t ko Trinidad cause he ran out fuel! the guy is almost 40 Dreamliner!!! look what happen in the last Vernom Forest fight, he lost the fight cause he ran out of fuel over a much younger fighter, not better than forrest but younger. In a way I respect ur oppinion if u think RJ would be a worthy opponent based in his background but me personally I think calzaghe and jones is gonna be a mismatch against RJ.Now, if they would it fight this fight at RJ prime time-totally diferent story.
